The gas props that hold my hood open on my 95 SE are shot. Any suggestions as to where I can find a reasonably-priced set of replacements?

I looked in a couple of mail-order catalogs and their listings oddly stop at 94.

I got some at Pep Boys, that were $40 each, but never figured out how to install them. The guys at Pep Boys couldn't get the old ones off either. Anyone know how? Anyways, I returned them and just keep propping my hood up with a metal bar.

Mine has gone out last year. I'd say save your money. Use an old broom stick. That'll never fail. The new struts will eventually fail in a few years anyway. I think the hood struts is a good and convenient design, but it just doesn't last.

can't find them

They are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find anywhere other than the nissan dealer and they charge through the teeth. If i could get two for what nissan gets for one i would get them maybe but for now visegrips work. I've checked everywhere.

I did find a dealer that sells them for $90 a piece and it's free shipping with no tax. But still, that's $180.00. Definitely not worth it, when a simple bar would last the life of the car. If they were around $70 for 2, then I would consider getting them.

I found a cheap source!

After tracking down several dead ends, I called the manfacturer of most replacement hood/hatch gas lifts. The company is Arvin-Meritor in South Carolina. This is a great company - very helpful.

They said the replacement strut is "StrongArm 4524" and that NAPA, CarQuest, and Advance Auto should all be able to get them. I checked Advance - they listed them at $16 each, but said all of their warehouses were out of stock and had no idea of when they would be available. CarQuest said - "yeah, we have them, $25 each". So I should have a pair tonight.

Problem solved!
