maxima and snow

My maxima is holding up goood so far in the snow. (about 2 inches so far)
Ive only noticed a problem stopping/starting on hills. How is everyone else in the snow?

I got stock rims with Goodyear Eagle LS rubber.
Also have auto trans with traction control.

Just wanted to know how everyone else is doing and if the traction control really makes that much of a difference.

I did pretty well last winter, the car has a lot of weight up front so it helps with traction. Traction control only really helps if you are stupid and floor it from a standstill, just stops the tires from sitting there roasting.

I drove my 235/40WR-18's HTR+ (all-season) last year when we got the 25", and had no problems with my 5 spd. The 5-spd has wheel hop in the rain, just have to ease it in.

got about 6" here yesterday, I am reluctant to drive around a lot in the snow down here in virginia, as a native NYer, I am used to the snow but the people around here drive like morons, so the question is not how does the maxima do in the snow, its how does the maxima do at escaping the other cars. But the 5spd helps control traction and would be nice to have abs but I didn't have it on my last car so I am used to pumping them when needed

My traction sucks like none other in the snow...I had to go up my street backwards this morning because it would take me all day to go up foward.

Isn't that crazy? I used to never believe it, 1" of snow in DC and cars are off the road etc. But after I moved to Philly, I now believe it. We get rain here and you have to leave 20 mins early on a 14 mile commute to work. Even this am, maybe we got 2-3" of heavy slushy snow, there are cars on the road at 6 am with no headlamps or only parking lamps or fogs and no headlamps. It's truly bizarre. I guess gone are those days when you got 12" of new snow but had 4 sticky/studded Hakkapelliitta's and drove 70 mph in on I-91 VT......

coming home from work on 22 was like that today: asssholes with no lights on, tailgating. Saw a nissan pickup nail a van and flip it over. Other than that, the max handles fine. I was able to get around through last year's christmas day storm, so i don't think the 11" we're supposed to get today wil hurt her .

to whoever was talking about drifting. My boss was a wuss and left early, so me and a couple of people from work had some fun in the yard with our cars.

You guys and your snow.

Maxima is fine in the snow. No problem with all season tires, and like a f-ing tank with snow tires. If you're having problems, you either have the wrong tires or don't know how to drive in the snow.

Absolutely right, bro'. I had no problems with the stock RS-A's. When I went to the 18's which are "all-season," I was a bit skeptical. But 40-series A/S do work just as well, though skinnier is more ideal from a physics point-of-view.

the first winter i didn't have any problems, but the first day of snow this winter ( it was pretty bad) i slid off the road twice, the first was just to the shoulder of the road, but the second time i was going around a corner, going REALLY slow, cause i had already gone off the road once before that day, and i still slid accross the road towards a car, and i was inches away from hitting them, but i lucked out and end up on the opposite shoulder. but i don't know why, must be tires or something, so i'm now getting a older 4runner or something for the rest of the winter. and i hope nobody recks there maxima's like i almost.

Woooo hoooo!!!! Minor drifting around almost every turn on my way into work today, and tonight @ midnight...Parking lot time!!!!!!! I wanna see how many complete spins I can pull off since it is on and off rain/sleet on top of the snow that fell this morning, and it's slowly turning back to snow! I love small layers of ice!

Actually, last year I was driving on a back road in the snow (same day last year), and the road slanted down on the outside, and before I knew it, I was moving forwards and sideways at the same time, enroute to a telephone pole. All I did was downshift, turn all the way left, punch the gas and yank up on the P brake. Thankfully no cars were on the road at all because I was sliding sideways down the middle of the road, but I thought I was gonna be a cross on the side of the road.

I moved down from a place where it never snows to a place where it sometimes snows back in June this year. Hadn't even put on any winter tyres by the time we got 15cm (6") of snow. I didn't think I'd be able to drive the Max until the snow cleared and would be stuck driving the Nissan Patrol we have. I was pleasently surprised to find that when I had to run out to attend to our horses down the road, the Max (the Patrol was out at the time) handled fine on the road AND through a snow covedered paddock (heh, I wasn't walking any further then I had to). The only time it would slip was when I would try and do a U turn in the paddock. Could feel the ABS kicking in when I put the breaks on though.

Driving on the main road you could see cars slipping into the banks of snow on the side of the right and hardly any of our roads have seperators to prevent head on smacks (except in Auckland and Wellington), so was more alert then usual watching to see if someone would slip over my way.

Although I'd miss driving the Max, it feels safer to be driving in the Patrol, mainly because it's 4WD and it's heavy

all i need to say is VQ+ACT+RE92 = worse traction ever

even on an even road without using the gas only letting off the cluch i still slid to the right like a foot every time before i got some traction. Starting up a hill was not an option, had to get a running start every time.

No snow this morning but now its pretty bad here in MA. Heavy and wet snow. This is the first time my max and I met the snow. I got my car 2 months ago. Took me a good 2 hours to go to Walmart and Taco Bell which is normally a 10 minute drive. I got to say, my tires suck! I have cooper cobras that came with the car. The front tires have some tread on them but the rears are almost bald. I was hoping I would be able to stick with them until the summer but I guess not. After eating the curb, gashing my rims at a super high speed of 4 miles per hour, and slidding everywhere I went, I think I am going to invest in some new tires very soon. Cars were passing me right and left but hey, I'd rather live.

Oh, and my alignment is off and the right axle boot is ripped. Should I wait to get my alignment fixed until after I replace the axle or at the time I replace my tires?

get it done after you get your new half axle. you shouldn't need one after just new tires. i hear some places do lifetime alignment for more money but you can always go back and get one if neccessary.

i think i'm buying me some snow tires asap for the damn honeycomb winter rims.

Crazy snow... took me forever to get home from work... thought it wasn't going to snow till sunday. Bastard forecasters. Can't wait for my new all season tires to come. Almost got in so many accidents and saw way too many happen.

quick question since this is the first time driving in the snow(never saw it in florida...)

When i step on my brakes hard i get a bad grinding sound??? Almost feels like my rotor fell off for a second But then everything seems fine. It doesn't really happen when I am slowly putting on the brakes. I have abs if that helps. Also my car is lowered quite a bit. Maybe snow is building up in there??? just wondering if it is normal...

anyways, drive safe and watch out for the crazy soccer moms in thier minivans not giving a **** about anything in their path!!! (saw one take out a tree today )

That weird grinding sound is ABS kicking in, you should feel it in the pedal also.

I've never really had a prob with the max in the snow thank god. All you really need is some good tires to keep you planted on the ground. I was driving my gf's 3000gt. OMG has to be the worse car to drive in the snow. I was slippin and sliding all over the place. Would def rather drive the maxi.

damn skippy....during last year's 2-footer, i had NO problems (stock rims & OEM Goodyears) except for non-driving MF's who were too frightened to move outta da friggin' way!

even coming home tonight in moderate snowstorm..."GET OUTTA MY WAY, YOU PUSS!!!"

We had 143" of snow last winter and my Maxima sucked. This year I have new Blizzaks installed and no snow yet. I'll report back when I get a chance to try them.

The only thing wrong with my max in the snow is that it looks very fugly with stock rims

ejj is right, you're either using the wrong tires or don't know how to drive in the snow

I think cooper cobras tested very bad in snow in consumer reports tests. So with some decent tires, things have no were to go, except better!
