How do you know if a transmission is on its last legs?

My car is an auto, '97 with 101K on it, I drive it pretty hard sometimes going into overdrive and then driving with overdrive off. I should get my tranny flushed soon but am afraid I might mess up my transmission as I don't know the last time it was flushed, however, mechanic said it was flushed before just don't know when. Fluid is pinkish btw. So how would you know if a transmission is on its last leg? Would slipping be the only way to know? And the OD OFF light blinking? Should I get the tranny flushed?

I have the same question. My mechanic also mentioned that if the transmission hasn't been flushed before, if I do it now it would shorten the life of the transmission. --- Transmission feels fine...but at 123,000 miles I am starting to get paranoid.
