No, don't use pliars or anything because you WILL damage the ****, even it it's just tiny scratches, unless of course you don't care about the shift **** being damaged/ruined.
I've done this on 2 5-spd 4th gen Maximas now - actually a friend of mind did...he is very strong and was able to unscrew both ***** using his hands with lots of force

Wow..that's new!!! I dont think anyone has ever attempted to remove the stock shifter!!

Try using those adjustable bar clamps that have the rubber ends on them. I put one on mine and turned it counter-clockwise and came right off. Its amazing what you can do with those clamps!
