technosquare ecu check engine light, any answers?

has anyone figured out the deal with the check engine light when you have a technosquare ecu? i have the 96 ecu in my 97 and it needs to get inspected in a month or so. i know many people have discussed this but i was wondering if any answers have been found.

replace your ecu, reset cel, go for inspection, replace ecu, call it a day.

Do you still have your 97 ECU? If you do, then what Jamsan wrote is what I would do. If not try to find a used one.

Yeah, us '97s usually keep our original ECU's for just that reason. If not then reset the '96 right before inspection and hope for the best. (Or even better - borrow somebody's '97 for a few hours)

Forgive me if this question sounds really dumb but why would anyone with a '97 use a '96 ecu?

Sure did, I'm not much for tweeking my car as much as most guys do here. But the title is saying that the cel is on and this guy has a 96 technosquare (never heard of that) ecu on his 97 maxima. So...why would anyone with a '97 use a '96 ecu?

Because the only ECU's that can be modified for our cars, the 4th gens, are for the 95 and 96 model years. No one has been able to "crack" the the ECU's for the 97-99's, so people with 97 and 98 use modified ECU's from the 95 and 96's. The folks with a 99 can't swap out their computers, different ECU, more like the 5th gen ECU.

It will be a long time until we find out...

ECU modification, ie: high performance chip? How else do you modify an ecu?

send your ECU to a place like technosquare and they will reprogram it w/ new info... ie fuel mapping... timing perhaps... and some have raised rev. limiters

As to your original question the code is probably for the rear 02 sensor. The 95/96 ECU only understands a 3wire non-heated type. Your 97+ probably has the 4wire heated style. One could probably re-wire a '96 sensor into your pipe and get rid of that MIL. It's been posted before but nobody (incl me) has ever bothered with it yet.

Now that I'm going back on the chip I'll probably do it since I already have the '96 sensor lying around here.

I don't think that the CEL on modified ECUs in 97-99 are bad for the car. It's just a pain to always see that freakin CEL on. And you will have to keep your 97-99 ECU to periodically check to see if you really have a problem with the car.
