cutting stock shifter
i am probably gonna cut my stock shifter shorter and add a different shift ****...how do i get that know to stay on straight (anyway besides taking it to a machine shop)...and how hard is it to remove the shifter and replace w/o screwing anything up?
how much do most people typically cut off the top? 2in?
thanks

Why would you cut your shifter? STS's are the same lenght as a the stock, but he pivot is in a different location.
personally I liked the stock shifter cut. it felt nice and small.....but the good thing about the sts is that it makes the shift smuch smoother. also if you cut it, just buy one of those shifters that have 3 screws around that tighten on the rod. i had a momo cobra.....now its just collecting dust....
PM plurco about his cut stock shifter.
He cut 3 inches out of the middle and welded it back together. This has 3 main advantages:
The OEM **** still screws on
The OEM boot stays up like it's supposed to
The angle stays correct

CartBoy was gonna make a STS for the Maximas, but there wasn't enuf interest @ $100 shipped. So he only made them for the 1st and 2nd gen Altimas. Theoretically, the Altima shifter should fit 4th gens.

I did this a few years ago. I used a imitation c/f **** from pep boys which had set screws to secure the ****. Don't forget to use lock tite on the set screws to keep them from vibrating loose. It hasn't given me any problems the last two years.
I bought a 25$$ shift **** of ebay and its fine. Just dont buy the aluminum one because it wil break on you . I got a S.S. one and i love it. Plus shifter isn't something to important to me that i would want to spend alont of momey on.
i cut mine in the car with taking ti out. i just took a ****in saw to it, and added a $30 shift **** on it. I love it. The only thing is you will never be able to get the stock one back on. Changing yoru shift ***** will never mess anyhtng up. easy as cake
i just got a brand new dremel for christmas...maybe i can use that to cut the shifter while its still in the car. i havent used the dremel much but i tried it on some plastic and bits flew everywhere...i dont want to make a huge mess...hmmm
im also really interested in cutting out a center section to keep angles the same (tho ive never seen the shifter out so i can only imagine what i think plurco and Cartboy? did)

I've had the Pacesetter STS and B&M STS and I'm back to the cut shifter and much happier. I cut 1.5" off the top of the shifter and added an alunimum shift **** that adds some nice weight to the shifter. I love the feel and the reduced throw plus the shift pattern stays in the stock location instead of moving forward like the other shifters.

I cut 1.5 off mine and I am very happy. I cut mine with a dremel and it wasnt messy at all. I put a hole in the bottom of a bag and slided it over the shifter then taped it. While dremeling I just pulled the bag up to catch all the little peices.

Did you cut down the E brake handle? I am tired of bashing my knee cap!
