Max slowly dying
Max slowly dying
Wassup Guys,
My max has hit the 100,000 mile mark and its starting to have some problems. It ran like a champ for 7 years with no problems whatsoever, but recently its been giving me one headache after another. In a few recent weeks,
1) I replaces a bad knock sensor. It costed $90 shipped but what really sucks about it is I got my hands all cut up trying to put the socket on the bolt.
2) My mechanic says the rear right shock is worn. I will probably get a new coilover suspention system. It would cost over $1300.
3) The rotors are warped. Need to replace with big brake kit.
4) The engine turns off when I start in cold weather. Need to tune up the car.
5) There is a loud squeaking noise somewhere to the left of the valve cover, near the belts. Probably need to replace those too.
6) My trunk won't open unless I pull hard on it. Can the trunk be replaced?
I am somewhat disappointed. I thought that my maxima could last me at least 200,000 miles without breaking down.
How are your maximas doing?

Hummm if the car is giving you this much trouble you should sell it.The car is 7 freakin' years old! How can you expect you car to last 200+k if you don't take care of it? You need to do more than just change the oil, and put gas. Noobs....

2) Congratulations on getting 100K on your stock suspension. You don't need coilovers, a good lowering setup will cost you around 500-600 bucks.
3) Do you really need big brakes? Replacement rotors can be baught for as little as 40 bucks.
4) Clean your throttle body. 6 bucks for a can of cleaner.
5) You got 100K out of your original belts, again congratualtions. Now replace them and your good for another 100K
6) Lube everything or adjust the truck spring. Thats a free-bee.
Why are you dissapointed? These are normal maintenance items for a car that is 7 years old with 100K on it. All of these are DIY items as well. Dump a grand into it and your good for another 100K. That sounds pretty good to me!

i second that. no need to whine.
Be glad that you don't have drivetrain or transmission problems (yet) considering the miles you have on your car. The differential carrier bearing usually is the common thing to go bad on some Maximas from 60k miles up. Yours isn't so bad, what made it overwhelming is that the problems occurred at the same time. It's all part of wear and tear on any car.
My car has 115k miles and the following went bad:
1) multiple EGR issues
2) valve cover gaskets
3) cv boots (both sides)
4) all o2 sensors
5) ignition coil packs on #3 & #5 spark plug positions
I'm anticipating other things to start going bad but its all part of owning and maintaining a high mileage car.
My '95 Toyota 4Runner Limited Edition just lost one injector and needs a major valve job, plus multiple EGR issues, and various other gaskets that had gone bad....total repair estimate, $1500! But hey, after all is fixed, I'd have a great running spare vehicle and still no new car payments.

almost all your problems are pretty common and thats freakin great if thats all that has gone wrong for 100,000 miles. At 100K miles, my max had gone through 2 sets of rear shocks, (all 4 shocks are blown right now at 134k miles) knock sensor as well as all 3 O2s. warped rotors all around. Can't forget the blown autotrans at 106K. and most recently, both rear calipers seized up and had to be replaced.
I think i can help you with the trunk problem though. When you open the trunk and look down, you see the lower half of the locking mechanism. After you've remove the plastic molding covering it, you can then loosen the bolts holding it and take it off. I cleaned mine off and lubed it up with WD40. I didn't have the same problem as you though, mine was much worse. I had used to much foam insulation in my trunk lid and it refused to open up. Had to remove the back seat and crawl in to fix it.

That's not dying. First I thought your engine might be leaking oil slowly and your tranny might be slipping or something, but this is not much. Why put on coilovers and big brake kit if the car is dying?
I got fixes for #'s 4 and 5 on your list...
#4: Thats the symptom of a dirty TB. clean it and be happy again.
#5: The squeaking is either a bad tensionor pulley or too tight of belts, take a bar of soap and run it against the inside of the belt while the engine is running, but be careful.. My friend did this to his eclipse and hasn't had a squeak since.
Take care of your car and your car will take care of you

Mine is a 96 with almost 145 k and loving it. As for having the stock suspension for 100 k,I think mine is stock too. The stut boot is quite damaged, but so far no problems. as othe said this before me, your problems are not bad at all. I really expect my max to go over 200 k. Take care of your problems ,and you ll see ,you ll be happy that you did. I see domestic cars that have half of the mileage, and run like doodoo.

In saying that, I'm at the 150k miles mark and the only thing I've had on you list is the knock sensor and the rotors, and a starter motor (not on your list).
