Starter fixed for free!

My starter quit yesterday and I went to Motorvate.ca to view Frank's instructions on the rebuild. I disassembled the starter motor and gears, cleaned and regreased them and put it all back together and the thing works perfect! The moral is the next time you have a starter issue, try the regrease instructions located here: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/516 before spending the $$$ on a new unit. Only basice mechanical knowledge and socket set are needed.

I've done this so many times, I can get to the starter, remove it, dissasemble, regrease, reassemble, and completly reinstall in less than 1/2 hour

I just recently started to get the whining noise on the starter. How do I know if it's a lube problem or just a bad starter? The noise does not occur all the time.

Thanks

I get a whining noise only on days where there's moisture in the air (rain/snow). After 10 minutes of driving, the noise goes away. Would this be more likely my belt making the noise or the starter?

You should only here a whining only when starting the car (maybe a few seconds after). If it's a continuos whine for liek 10 min, its not your starter. If the car starts fine, but you here a high pitched grinding for 1 second after, you need to relube. If your starter fails to starts, try to remove, disassemble, and sand the contact points. If you need extensive help, PM me...I've done this plenty and plenty of times

It's most likely my belts then. Do you unplug your battery when you take off your starter?
