Just curious... Why'd you choose a maxima? Any regrets? I've had mine for a little less than a year. I bought it after reading all the positive reviews out there, on carreview.com, edmunds, carsurvey, etc. I just wanted something fairly fast, looked OK, reliable, and fit with my budget. Now, I still like my car, but yeah, I've had some buyers remorse. There really isn't that much of an aftermarket for our cars, is there? Past ecu, mevi, intake & exhaust, there really isn't much left for the NA maxima. You can go FI, but then that's pretty high maintenance. Less reliable/more work involved in keeping everything running. You can't really take it cross country on long road trips and such anymore. Installing the y pipe was a regret. I busted both o2 sensors, one completely snapped by the o2 sensor socket, the other just stopped working. The $180 pipe, became $380. Would've been cheaper just to have someone else install it. I'm a young guy too, 19, and the max doesn't really impress. It's not the kind of car I pick up dates in. Yeah, I prefer a sedan that looks slow and drives fast much over the losers drive coupes that look faster and drive slower. Like eclipse gs, cougars, stock 240sx, cavaliers, 98 back v6 stangs, etc. Or anything with a non-functional hood scoop. It impresses the chicks who don't know **** about cars, they just like the shiny hubcaps and sporty styling. I've been thinking lately, to purchase a 94 dodge stealth rt. Around the same value as my max Twin turbo, all wheel drive, 300+ hp. Looks really good, drives fast... Mechanical reliability reports are pretty good too. Sell my max around 6k, part out aftermarket, save up a grand or two, and buy a stealth. I'll probably do so before summer rolls around. I'd miss the .org though. I haven't seen a single 3000gt/stealth forum around.

 

I'm 18, and I've gotten more compliments on my car from women than I have from any car enthusiasts. my girlfriend loves my car. out of nowhere the other day, she randomly complimented my david L's.
not to mention, my car's beige, ffs. not exactly the most appealing and attractive color selection for a maxima.

that's not why I have my car though.
I love the way it looks sitting outside my house; my car makes ME happy.

I'd hope you can find other ways to pick up girls besides a fast looking dodge anyway.

 

Nah... I have a girlfriend. I'm just saying the maxima isn't an impressive looking car. Hey, maybe yours likes your car, thats fine. But most see it as another average sedan, like an accord or camry. Just an everyday, family car. With our huge wheel gap, funny looking rear, it's not as hot looking as sports coupes.

 

anyone who sees the new accord coupes as "another average sedan" should have their eyes checked. I'm not exactly a honda fan, but that car is gorgeous.

I get your point though. your maxima isn't a corvette. if you want a true sports ride, you didn't buy the right car.

 

Just wanted to let you know that Stealth R/Ts and 3000GT VR4s are not, by any means, ultra reliable or cheap to maintain. They become extremely expensive. They utilized groundbreaking technology at the time, much of which still has yet to be duplicated, so it can be very finnicky, and the repair bills can get ridiculous on any one that's over 60K and hasn't had the major services... While I love my max, and have yet to find any car out there quite like it, it definately hasn't been anywhere near as reliable as I would've thought.

 

I got a kid, so I needed a fast reliable jap car to race the family around in. I could take anymore of chevy's crap.

 

Well we are sorry to see you go ,but if you dont like the styleing of the max then get rid of it ,there is someone some where right now looking for a maxima and would love to have your car .I love my baby and get looks and thumbs up at least 3 times a week .I love My maxima.

 

yeah, I get tons of comments on my max...and it don't even look that different than stock. People always say "i don't know what it is about your car, but it looks so much nicer than other maximas I see". Even though mine's been a bit of a pain maintenence wise, i still love it to death, so much so that i'm considering buying a second one. BTW, the 3000GT/Stealth forums are at www.3si.org

 

I got my car because of the way it looked and its notorious history of dependability. In almost 4 years of ownership, it has not dissappointed. "I" love the way the maxima 4th gen looks. "I" think it's sexy, unique, sportily refined, sleek, and styled in a manner that keeps it in league with cars that are still coming out. I don't know where some of you guys are from, but women from North Carolina, to GA, PA to NY, All have loved the Max. Spots I've been in all all these states crawl with all sorts of rides I would deam Hot, lexus, BMW's, tastefully modded Honda's ect.....Amidst it all, Ladies still flock to the max.

A dirty max and a clean can make a world of difference in it's appearance, almost a Jekle and Hyde sort of change.

Dirty and grundgy- Your right....it really can resemble a grocery getter
Clean and shimmering - People walk up an ask me What kind of car is that/What year it is/ WOW!! A 97!! Your kidding me....Most of these people with Rides I think are nicer than mine.

yeah everyone thinks mine's newer than a 96. And when you drop it down a gear you can still push people back in their seat (I got a friend to cheer last night after I dropped it into 1st). I've been very pleased with my Max, in almost every respect.

The only thing that I regret is not getting the 5spd.

 

I've had mine 3 years....and no regrets I actually feel that excitement of a driving a new car even three years later.

 

People are funny when they say that a car is not dependable because they have to have maintenance done to them. ha ha ha. That is called owning a automobile, or any other machine, for that matter. I don't know one single machine that gets used as much as a car that does not require the same amount of maintenance. If you want to never have to do anything to it....stop driving!!! If you want to get a stealth, I don't care what stealth it is, be my guest. Talk about paying for maintenance. That is a beast.
As far as dependability goes...the max is typically as good as it gets. You cannot blame the 02 sensor thing on the maxima not being dependable because you did it when you put it in. I got my max when it already had 65,000 miles on it, and 21,000 miles later...still going strong. I have done nothing to it. Now, when I say nothing, I mean I have had to put on new rotors, change oil, brake pads, tires, etc. That is nothing for a car! That is just stuff that happens...yes even to accords and camrys.
As far as the looks go, I will have to agree with most of the other guys in here...I get so many looks and compliments on my Maxima every day it is not even funny. It is as sports as you can pretty much get in a decent price range, that will seat a lot of people comfortably.

 

Very true. you will pay much more than anticipated for a stealth. just be aware of that. You can make your maxima look pretty good with a few exterior mods. even just wheels will make a Huge difference. Take a look at some of the members rides. there are some unbelievable looking maximas rolling around. what ever you do, good luck.

I've owned my 4th gen for 5 years now. My prior car was a modded red/black 94 Z28. With everything I've done to my car both visually and performance wise, I turn a ton more heads on the street and at the track. My Z28 ran mid 13s which is "whoop-de-do" performance for an F-Body because everyone expects it to be fast, but my NA Maxima gets a "holy crap that's freaking quick for a NA V6 sedan". Once I complete my Stillen bodykit (hopefully this weekend), my car will look damn fine There's also a lot more to modding than just acceleration mods. I've added aftermarket leather, full suspension, subframe connectors, wheels, brakes, and little visual enhancements to make it my own. I've already pulled off 14.4s in this car which is far quicker than I ever thought it could go when I first got it. Now I'm gunning for 13.9-14.1 this spring on drag radials.

And like I've said before, we have nearly all the same available mods as Honda crowd has. The difference is we don't have 80 different companies making the same thing.

I really love this car. Also, if you buy cars because it's what attracts women, you should start thinking about why you're insecure with yourself. Anyways, who wants a women that likes you for your car? The last type of women I'd want in my life is a materialistic one.

Oh my. I can't believe my eyes. My Max which looks alot like Brudaddy's except I have a bra and Altezza's is... pimp. I love my car. With the Accords and Camry's out there that bore the living caca out of me. I have Thunder since October 02 and I love it. I think there is a true race car driver inthe spirit of a Maxima owner. I looked for mine for 2 weeks and I wanted a ***** red one. I got one. I love it. The only regret I have is that I wish I could afford to get the stock 5 spokes chromed... I am an elementary school teacher after all. My kids are always asking me to roll down my windows from far away.

 

I have had the chariot since late 1997, and she certainly is a wonderful car. I still remember weeping like and old woman over the 97 BMW M3, just to much money. I wanted a sports car but the job I had at the time called for something with more room. I ended up buying the maxima, and dont regret a moment.

I weep for the M3 also... I would like a ***** red one of that too... But $$$ is an issue. So, the Maxima is the normal man's BMW. Funny enough I had an 85 325e, red with tan leather in high school. Funny how life repeats itself.

Call and price a timing belt service fee for the Stealth, before buying. Then factor in two turbos, awd and a likely abused tranny and clutch. There is a reason that their resale is poor.

 

If you want more show with your go, then mod your Max.

If you want to spend a lot of time dishing money out, or laying on your garage floor... get a 3000GT/Stealth.

Go find a Regal T-Type or a Grand National. Be fun to play with, and it would only attract the kind of girls that know their stuff.

I have a 1997 SE White/Beige leather. Bought it new. Now rapidly approaching 300,000 miles. In 1997 the Maxima was a great car for the money.

 

I am 20 years old i just sold my 240 SX with rims, sound system etc. I got a 1996 MAxima and i have had some much attention from the opposite sex w/ my Maxima

 

I may not get many girls yelling for my 1988 maxima but I get tons of offers from people wanting to buy it from me everytime Im on the road. I love my car!

I had a light blue 1988 Maxima back in the day. That was probably five years or so ago now.

 

Itsa rare color combination. Ive only seen one here in Central Texas and two others in Atlanta. Its a two tone Gold/beige whatever on top part and white on the bottom part. Its the only two tone I think actually loks decent on the 2nd gen maximas. Im going to be getting my second max by this march or summer. Im looking for a 4th gen. now.

 

What's with all the women bashing... Jeez, I'm not just buying a car for them. I still like performance over looks. And my gfs been with me since before I had a car. I didn't mean I wanted a car that could get me dates. I've never been in a car when I asked girls out... I don't see a real logical way to do that, besides maybe slamming on the brakes when you see a chick, then opening the window and asking. But no self respecting girl would think you were anything but some arrogant jerk if you did that, like you were trying to buy her or something. I just remember showing my gf the max the first day I bought it. I was ecstatic, but she looked at the car and and I could tell she was trying to think of a compliment, and she says " It's uh, really clean"
I'm thinking "clean?". That's all you can say? I want to pick her up in a car that she'd be proud to ride in. But before everybody tells me I'm whipped, and that I should get a car for myself, so if I'm happy, then f*ck her. I'd also really like higher performance potential too. The AWD stealth puts out on both accounts. Performance and looks. I can't get a rear wheel drive, since it snows up here, so the AWD stealth/3000gt seems to fit perfectly with me. But hey, I'm hearing that it's unreliable? What exactly goes wrong with these? JD power gave it's mechanical reliability a 4/5, so better than most. equal to the maxima. Defacto, did you have one? What'd you think of it? What were the common repairs and costs?

 

Ok for the Stealth/3000GT,I dont6 want to hurt anyones feelings but my best friend that ive known my whole life that i see everyday drives a 94 3000GT.Lets just say that in every aspect he likes my Max better and always wants to trade cars for a day.His car is very heavy and drives like a skateboard.I told him to change the shocks but he said they are electronic and would cost to much.His transmission went twice and had to be rebuilt.We race and I smoke him every time with with my stock Max.He might have a problem with his timing belt.The thing i dislike most about his car is that i can barely fit in it,even in the front.Its so tiny in there I hate it.I hate the interior,I hate how it drives.Maximas are better and he knows it.I dont mean to offend anyone,but in my opinion going from a 4th gen to a Stealth/3000GT is a big step down(this is for the 220hp model,i never drove the AWD version).

I totalled my 90 300zx for a 97se maxima. I really loved that car. It was a total chick magnet. The maxima is not really a head turner like the 300zx. The 300zx was harder to maintain, it always had something wrong with it. If it wasn't the timing belt it was the a/c. The maxima that I have now is doesn't have problems. The reliablilty of the car makes me love the max even more. I have about 132,000 miles and still feels like I drove it off the lot the first day I bought it.
Plus the maxima is a true sleeper car. Alot of people that drive imports take for granted the VQ30DE. With enough mods in a max, you are more likely to go faster than most people. I just wish I had enough money for a turbo. Then those stupid muscleheads that own suped up cobras and cameros next door can quite reving their engines at me.

 

I bought my maxima because I've always been a big nissan fanatic: '86 maxima wagon, 95 200sx SE-R, '91 maxima se,95 200sx SE-R, 93 SE-R, and now I drive a '95 maxima SE and a '91 SE-R. I fell in love with nissan's when my brother took me for a ride in my aunts 280zx turbo when i was a kid, then again when I learned to drive a stick in my brother's old '93 SE-R when I was 16(that I totaled couple years later ). I've had my maxima since early 2000, after my dad passed away.

 

I'm 19 and I had mine since I was a senior in High Skoo, I guess thatd be about 2 years.

Don't worry about it. I'm a max owner still, I didn't drop any cash on a 3000gt/stealth yet. Yeah, the car does seem kind of like a boat. 3800 lbs for the turbo, AWD version. Your friend's car weighs 3000-3300 lbs, depending on the model. Maximas are surprisingly lightweight. 3000lbs, it's about the same or less than many conventional coupes. I do like the sleeper aspect of the car. I don't think a max could smoke a 3000gt vr4/stealth RT turbo. 0-60 in 5.3, stock. 320 hp. similiar torque at a low rpm. AWD, so you could drop the clutch at high rpms without worrying about massive wheel spin. I don't care that the interior is tiny... I don't have a family to haul around. Yeah, the best thing going for the max is the passenger space. It is one of the fastest large sedans around, for a good price, reliable. One of the best choices if you need that. But I don't really. A lot of guys in the org really seem to be out for speed, first and foremost. Image too, is big. Look at the popularity of catbacks and intakes. Body kits. Lowered maxes. All designed to make the maxima look, act, and sound more aggressive. Makes you think, is that really what the max is designed for? Dudes dropping some real cash for turbos and superchargers. What're they looking for? The maxima is a comfortable, roomy, quick car. It's expression is a calm composed, mature one. It's the nature of the car. Sleeper status. But putting intakes, body kits, catbacks, ... it takes away from that. People are trying to give it a more aggressive look. More aggressive sound. More aggresive performance at the expense of the calm, composed demeanor that defines the car as it is designed. I'm not knocking them. I'm one of them. But it just makes me think. Is the max really the right platform for me to do that?

 

one look at hlh0501's max and you could NOT tell he recently put down 560fwhp at the dyno. No offense, but the stealth/3000gt is JUNK imho.
