why my car has a battery cover?

Hi
i put a battery in my 99 I 30 today. The OE was a Panasonic - could not find the size - looked in the owners manual 3 times. I put in a size 24F, which i knew would be about 1/2 inch"wider' left to right than a 35 but more powerful.
When I took the old battery out, the top 2/3 of it has a semi cover around it for what reason i do not know.
kinda like a battery box bot only shorter. It had large hole slots in the front and back that let you look at the water level thru the side of the battery.

this box did not fit over my "new" battery, sso I did not use it.

Is it a panasonic thing, or an I30 (Foo Foo) thing?
or something else like a heat shield - do not think it would do much as that tho

any ideas??

i just replaced the stock battery with an optima red top today myself and my old battery had the plastic cover as well. i left it on and gave it to autozone for my 8 dollar core refund.
my car started right up after two days of being completely dead.
