oil pan at the bottom of the engine block

Got a question about the oil pan of my '97 maxima. Just took my car into a repair shop to get it looked at cos i think theirs oil leaking from somewhere in my engine bay. They told me that the oil leak was from the perimeter of the oil pan, where it meets with the engine bay, and that they were going to take the oil pan out and clean it up, replacing the right and left seals (don't know what they are talking about) and that they'll use a silicone sealant to seal it back together. All this is going to cost about $400(including the price of and oil change and the left and right gaskets). Just want to know from you intelligent folks out their if this sounds right or is this over inflated? Ur response would be greatly appreciated.

Yah i guess that sounds right...they gotta move around ur exhaust, A/C compressor and two engine mounts.

I would suggest doing your engine mounts at the same time since its being supported.

Is it the upper or lower oil pan, there's two.
If its the lower, ripoff.
If its the upper, sounds ok.

By lower, I would assume the one with the drainplug to change the oil.. which if they're charging you 400 to take that off and clean it, you're getting royally f'ed. If there is another that they are talking about, someone please educate me on it because I don't really know.

Most oil pan gaskets are 2 pieces to get around other parts.

before you take it anywhere to get worked on or spend money on it go under your car and check it out for yourself.

look at this website

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/514

i have had a few maximas and most of them seemed to leak a bit at the oil pressure switch

it is an easy fix if that is your problem

hope this helps

or you could try a clean rag and some brake cleaner or carb n choke cleaner or some kind of degreaser and clean around your oil pan and check the next day for new leaks

dude buy gaskets from a website that sells OEM parts and do it yourself, as long as you dont mind gettin a little messy. You'll save about 350 bucks and you will bond with your car. Any old shmo with a rachet, some patience, and some time, can do anything.
