5 speed maybe going out?

if my tranny is in need of dire repairs, would it just be cheaper to just try and find a used one than to pay someone to rebuild it?

can i put an I30 tranny in?

sometimes a used one can be just as bad as a broken one. I30 will work

only real way is to have someone open it up and inspect all the gears, syncronizers and everything because what if the place you bought it dropped it or what if theres a bunch of sand that fell into the tranny? then that will chew up your tranny in no time.

yes an I30 will bolt right in BUT you need a new axle(I think drivers side) since the I30 has LSD

Gear whine in all gears. (Sound of gear teeth clicking together as they rotate because of misalignment, a result of failing differential bearings).

I also needed a new 4th gearset & synchronizers. . .

I had my transmission rebuilt last september ($2000). This included bearings, syncros, clutch. In addition to the tranny, I needed to replace the rear main seal. My mechanic said I could wait, however if the seal blew out completely, it would ruin the new clutch. The trans work was about 1500, the rear main seal was the other 500 because they have to remove the oil pan, ac compressor, and other parts, as well as raise the engine for clearance. Make sure when you have yours rebuilt you have the seal inspected, otherwise there will be more labor later since they will have to remove the transmission as well. Never rest your hand on the shifter because this can wear out the sincros (anyone who wants more info on this can post this thread and I will reply). Friendly advice.

I have a good relationship with my transmission mechanic and he called me in to show me the leaking seal (he wasn't trying to get extra money out of me).

because when you rest your hand on your shifter, that forces the shift linkage to push against the striking rod which then pushes the shift forks and the forks stress the syncros
