Clearance Light Mod – Make Them Brighter

So I popped out my clearance lights on my 95 Max, sanded down the higher nub on the 1157 bulb (the one next to the glass), stuck the bulb in 180 degrees from where it was originally and … Bam! Far, far brighter clearance lights.

Here’s what I want to know:

Has anybody performed the mod where both filaments are light in the 1157 bulbs by soldering the + wires to the same place? Did it make them noticeable brighter then just the 180 degree shaved upper nub mod? Did it make the bulb burn out quickly? Did you have to bump up the fuse amps? Was it worth the time?

What would be the point of this? Cutting off the nub makes the light brighter ALL THE TIME. Connecting both the nubs together ALSO makes them brighter ALL THE TIME. Why do the extra crap if it's the same thing?

I think what he's trying to say is that there are two filaments in the bulb, and instead of having only the brighter one illuminated, he wants BOTH illuminated.

personally, I wouldn't do this anyway, even if it were possible. it's almost too much with just the brighter filament lit up.

you didn't have to sand the nub down. . . all you had to do is take it and put it in the other way...slightly crooked but it stays in place. . . no need for the extra work.

i just cut the nub off and put electrical tape on it and put the bulb in the opposite way... never had any problems with it, and they a way brighter than stock and really make a difference..

there's many ways to do it. . . you can even take a pair of pliers and squeeze the one nub. . . it will just snap into the inside and no need for electrical tape. . . .i just took mine and turned it around without doing anything to the ***.....

You did the mod so that both filaments are lit or just so the 27 watt filament is lit? Any problems with the lights burning out or fuses blowing?

I dont think the Corner lights would apreciate this mod, they might start melting, It gets preety hot just with the mod, i think with both of them on it would lower the life of the bulb and make them melt your corners

I'm using polarg bulbs in my clearance lights. get em from custommaxima or your local rice shop.

with the snip and flip mod on the bulbs, they match sylvania cool blue headlights very nicely.

don't be fooled by the name though, the headlights aren't blue at all... a nice bright white color, next best thing I could find to HID... no cheesy fake xenon look.

Do your amber clearance lights match the amber bulbs in the clear corners? Does anybody's? I used the bulbs that came with my diamond clears in my corners and have some cheap amber clearance's from walmart but they don't match.

Those sylvania cool blues you speak of - do you mean sylvania silverstars? I have the silverstars, and they do look nice. Clean, very white light with a blue/purple hue. I'm thinking of putting Polargs in for my clearance lights as well

you'll never perfectly match them. I just have my hyper whites, stock fogs, and orange side front side marker.

I bought some cheap bulbs from Pep boys, and there a bluish tint, I tried doing the clearnece mod, but it didnt seem to work. I'm confused becasue I, was I suppose snip off the higher nub, which one is it???? Is it the short nub if you look at the bulb upside down, or the longer nub if you see bulb side up??? Do you guys get me?? Also how do fit it in, when the bulbs have those little sticks on the side, that make them only go the way there suppose to fit. Pics would help me alot. I know its a stupid that I'm having a hard time with a simple mod, but.........

Actually my bulbs on my clearance and side marker match. I believe the clearance light is oem and the side marker was the DC's I bought from custommax. They're kinda dull yellowish but they match! Sorry, no pics cuz it's snowing like a **** here.

Anyone here do the aluminum foil method?? My lights are too bright and the orange always peels off of the bulb...Would the shaving of the nub be a better way?

Go to NAPA Auto parts and get their bulbs. They are a little more yellow than brown (like AutoZone's amber ones.) Plus, I couldn't find the same brand of bulbs(to get the same color) at any of the 6 AutoZone's in my city. I just went to NAPA and they had them. Better quality too. (I didn't use the bulbs I got from Custommaxima.com, because they were more orange and not yellow.) YOu can also find replacement for those bulbs at NAPA.
