a lot of people here in CA say they have problems passing smog after installing an aftermarket y pipe. CA emmissions have a lot higher standards than many other states. just be sure to keep your stock y just in case you dont pass. im gonna install my y next month and i will definetly be keeping my stock just in case. dang CA emissions. =(

Dang, i'll have to reconsider getting a y-pipe then, cause i cant be swaping y-pipes cause i dont have the equipment to it. I'm think about just sticking with stock. = (

i dont want to discourage you. a y pipe is probably the best mod for a maxima. a must have. theres still a good chance that you will pass smog. just make sure you warm up the car VERY well before having it done. good luck either way!

If you don't want to risk it, and want a y-pipe that badly, Cattman makes CA-emission y pipes, part #: YG5/CA. it's up to you to decide if it's worth $350 tho

If your smog inspection is due soon, why not do the inpsection first then install the Y-pipe after? I'm sure you can wait til then, can you?

stock intake, budget y + b pipe with a "quiet" dynomax muffler.

If you decide to get it before your smog check just make sure to drive around for awhile and dont shut off your car when you arrive at the smog check place.

And if you get the pennysaver in your mail check for the smog specials. There are so many places that do it for $15 + $8.25 cert + $2 "transmission fee". I went to a place in El Monte and had it done for about $25 total. There should be many places in SFV that offer discount smog prices too. If i failed I wouldve taken off my pipe and go to another place and re-smog again because its so cheap. Lucky for me I passed with my 1st test.

95-98 Cali, 95-98 Fed, and 99 Fed uses the same y-pipe.

99 Cali spec has a different y pipe.

the y-pipes are different on 95-99's fed and the 99 california model.

here's the fed spec y-pipe for 95-99 (F shape)

and here's the 99 california y-pipe (not complete F shape)

i have a 99 cali -- and you can't just put a 99 california pipe on a fed spec to pass emissions. it doesn't work like that.

the 99 cali pipe has a different design that uses the factory y-pipe's pre-cat coming from the radiator-side header that doesn't get removed, since calis have 4 oxygen sensors instead of 3 like the feds.

also warm up your car real well so the cat starts working before doing the emissionstest, that's the reason for failing.

just make sure to check which model you have cali or fed before ordering the y-pipe.

Are you correcting me or elaborating what I wrote?

The above is what's causing the confusion. For US Maximas there are 2 emissions designations for EVERY MODEL year from 95-99.

There are 95-98 Cali emissions Maximas in addition to 95-98 Fed spec Maximas. I own a 97 cali-spec maxima.

However, the 95-98 cali, 95-98 fed, and 99 fed pipes are the same. Only the 99 Model year does the Cali spec pipe differ from the 99 fed or the previous cali/fed years.

This is why people care confused when ordering a pipe. If they own a 96 California spec Maxima they're told to get a cali spec y-pipe. Of course the ones sold that are labeled "California spec" are usually intended for the 99 model year only. Look at Budget's website. They list the "California spec" pipe seperately from the "95-99" pipe but they dont even include the model year applicable for said pipe. You can have a nasty suprise if you ordered the wrong pipe due to misinformation.

The only thing people should know is that only the 99 model year is there a difference between the two emissions spec.

Again, the 99 Fed spec is the same as the 95-98 cali and 95-98 Fed spec pipe.
99 cali spec uses the y-pipe similar to 2000+ Maximas. If you own a 95-98 Cali spec Maxima just ask for a fed spec pipe
