my does that too

when it is really cold...the temp needle barely past the cold mark..especially when on the freeway..it just go up like 2 mm from the bottom....but it doesnt seem like it is not functional because it does go up a little more when car in traffic to about 2/5 from bottom on the hot day...but the cold day...it usually doesnt run past 1/4 mark...my and it takes a long *** time for the engine to warm up....i dont know if this has anything with the COLD hard start..when it is freeezing cold....we have to depressed the gas pedal a little for the engine to run...else it just stall after it crank...i have a 95 GXE too

First response is for LoveMyMaximA.

Does it do this hot days and cold days? Or is this just a cold day thing?

My guess is that if it does this only on cold days, then it's the thermostat kicking in. If you live up north and the dash thermometer shows the engine warming up to a certain point and then dropping - then that might be that's it's just too cold outside and your radiator is just doing too good of a job.

Might be WAY off track but that's what popped in my head.

Second is for xedap1998.

Sounds like you need to replace your thermostat. (Less than $15 at the dealer) I had the same prob on my 95 - My car just would never warm up to normal temps. Found out the thermostat was stuck in the open position and it's actually would warm up after ages if I was in stop and go traffic. If I was on the freeway - it never would. If you do need a new thermostat - it's very easy to do and you don't have to remove anything to get to it and I didn't even have to drain my coolant.

Hope this helps.

The first thing to do is make sure the cooling system is full. Air pockets in the cooling system can produce confusing and contradictory symptoms. If the symptoms persist, read on...

There are two possibilities:
- the gauge is lying
- the gauge is telling the truth, and the thermostat is stuck open

If you can get lots of heat from your heater when the gauge says Cold, then the gauge is lying. Check the gauge sending unit, and replace it if necessary.

If you get little or no heat from your heater when the gauge says Cold, then the thermostat is stuck open. Replace it.

The last car I owned had a thermostat the failed open. Gas mileage went down and the heater wouldn't work. If you do have a bad thermostat, this is one of the few parts that I would highly recommend you get from the dealer. The one's at Pep Boys and Autozone are not fail-safe. I would much rather have my thermostat fail full open on a cold winter's day than have it fail full closed in August!

Where is the correct position when engine is fully warmed and running? Mines a little below 1/2 way. Thanks.

This varies from car to car. However, it should be about half-way and yours meets this criterion. A reading at either extreme is a sign of trouble.
