Hi!

I'm just curios to see if this has happened to anyone else.

When I buy 92 octane gas from a cheep gas station the car doesn't feel as swift as it should, and it doesn't last as long, about 50 miles less to the tank.

Does anybody know why this happens?, I thought that 92 octane gas was the same in every gas station. Which is the best brand?
Thanks.
José

The same thing happen to me. I purchased some speedway 92 in chicago, when I drove back for christmas. I got about 377 miles to the tank of gas. When I put that Amoco Premium in, I almost got another 100 miles to a tank of gas. Amoco gas gets my vote hands down.

Pay attention to the fuel you are buying. Anti-Knock Index (what you called octane) is only one factor in making a purchase decision. Some stations sell gasohol, others sell gasoline. Gasohol contains less heat energy than gasoline and will deliver fewer miles per gallon.

Also a lot of times the guys (trucker) filling up the tanks of gas will put whatever in anywhere. So you may be 'buying' 93 but only getting 87 or whatever.

I've had the same thing happen to me, I've noticed Shell & Amoco have the best gas (for mileage; not price). I guess you get what you pay for.

I just paid $1.43 for 87 (cheapest) gas from Amoco this morning in Chicago suburbs. $1.63 for premium.

Wow, that is high. I'll never complain about the price of gas again. How do you like the Chevron gas?

best gas i've used

the best gas i've used is 76 gasoline, with propower the acceleration is smoother and you can actually feel it , unlike techron(how do u know if it is really cleaning ur engine you can't see it) but i can feel propower so i get it. shell gives u more miles to the gallon for me.

i live in souther cali, and the premium is around 1.77 at the cheapest, so your 1.50 something is crazy cheap for premium.

TIP: don't get premium from those pumps with only one nozzle that you have to select which grade you want, go to the ones that have a separate nozzle for each. from my experience i get about 40 gallons less to the tank when i go to the pumps with 1 nozzle only, so maybe you think ur getting 92 octane but your not.

Article on different gasoline...

This was awhile ago (about a year or so), but Car & Driver did an article on gas from different gas companies (Amaco, Chevron, BP, etc.).

After extensive testing the top 2 were as follows:

1. Chevron - so that Tecron must really be more than just a marketing scheme.
2. Amaco

Can't remember anything after second place, but I always look for the Chevron sign on the road. Then, if no Chevron...Amaco.

Places I wouldn't recommend are Citco, RaceTrack, Speedway, and QT. QT however is kind of a toss-up. They guarantee your engine from f**king up with proof that their gas caused it, but how many of us *really* keep every gas receipt?

Re: Article on different gasoline...

Out of all the different brands that I have used, Cheveron is the one my Max likes the best, I've never had pinging while using this gas, unlike with other brands.

Speedway Gas & Ethanol plus an intro...

My first Maxima post!

All the Speedway Stores around here sell gas that is 10% ethanol.... which is a bad thing as far as mileage is concerned.

I've had bad luck with any -straight- premium (non-gasahol)

Reading the performance posts... It seems import guys get ripped off when it comes to performance parts. The cheapest Y-pipe costs $250!!! A person can purchase a whole set of headers for a muscle car for that! A single piece of stainless tubing (B-pipe) for $250! A set of two 2.5" mandrel bent tailpipes for my 66 mustang runs around $100. Those import companies have one killer profit margin.

I'd LOVE to buy a Y-Pipe, B-pipe and CAI for my car... but Damn!

I really do like the Maxima, though. It's a great car! ....just expensive to hop-up.

Check out the web sites for my older hobby...

This site has a wealth of info. Thanks!
