Nope not at all...I had my y-pipe and test pipe on before I put on my Flowmaster. The only thing is your stock muffler may sound a lil funny because of the amount of exhaust flow flowing through the restrictive stock muffler. This might have been a bigger problem for me because I replaced my cat with a test pipe.

But to answer your question: NO you do not have to buy an aftermarket muffler when you buy your y-pipe.

Your exhaust systm when fully completed may even be a tad bit louder due to your intake. (hence more airflow)

***Go with Warspeed Performance for your Y-Pipe relatively cheap in price not quality plus decent shipping Good luck!

no u do not need aftermarket muffler. the main purpose having an aftermarket muffler is to add sound, add rear-end aesthetics, and possibly 1-2WHP.

NA maxima get most WHP from intake 5-7WHP and y-pipe (10-15WHP), highflow cat/straight pipe will get you nothing, b-pipe will give you a good 4-5WHP, and muffler is 1-2WHP.

every car varies, dyno it and find out.

No, you don't have to get an aftermarket muffler. I am getting a 5th gen muffler, because they can handle more exhuast, with an after market y-pipe, stock cat, and custom b-pipe and mid-section. The muffler doesn't really add any horsepower because of it being a normally asperated car. If it was turbo, that would be another story.

I would recommend, especially on everything that I read, to go with Budget y-pipe. You can find it at Budgetperformance.com, and it is only $180 USD. It is not quite a high quality as stillen or possibly warpspeed, but most of the guys on the org here say that it is good for the money. In fact, the general consensus is that it is the most bang for the buck.

PLEASE explain to me why a b-pipe would yeild more HP than a race pipe???? More exhaust flow would only better performnce IMO

because our stock cats aren't that restrictive to begin with? no reason for a race pipe. if you want it, get it, whatever, but it's not necessary.

in regards to the first question, I have a budget y and an oem muffler and it performs just fine.

I just posted another thread about this, because I didn't know we would get off on this, being a y-pipe thread. But does a race pipe replace a cat totally? And paired with a 2.5" b-pipe and midsection, what would be the gain then?

see thread to post: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=281461

Yeah a race pipe would totally replace a cat but I don't see y anybody would want to do this, it doesn't yield the amount of hp for the prices out there. It doesn't do any good to take out your cat plus it's bad for the environment. As for the 2.5 midsection(b-pipe) yes that is a gain b/c it's less restrictive than the stock piping.

As for the y-pipe i would recommend you getting a better muffler. I put on the y before the apexi catback and it sounded horrible. Like someone had put a fart ballon on my exhaust.

fart balloon? That's bad...I've heard that just adding a ypipe to stock doesn't sound that bad. What are other peoples' impressions?

I've been in a max w/ ypipe and stock muffler and it sounded fine-barely noticable. Everyone has different opinions on what is loud and what sounds like crap so that is a tricky question......
