My starter went about 2 1/2 weeks ago; 97 SE with 58K. I purchased a rebuilt at a local auto parts store for $160 and put it in myself. The job wasn't hard and took me a little over an hour. From what I've read here...I'd better get used to changing it. I guess the 4th gen Max doesn't have the best starter...you'd think they'd have a recall on it?

Hey mbb6, just curious on how many miles your Max had when it went out - and do you start your car a lot per day like I do? I have 82K on an original.

starter

I gor one for my 95 SE at a local auto parts store for $130 plus a $50 core. I believe it was an OEM+ brand? It has a lifetime warranty but I don't want to replace it every 6 months.

BTW...The 95 design is an 8 tooth starter. It was later revised to 10 tooth with allows for easier spooling and is still compatible with a 95 I believe. I did mine in about 1.5 hours with absolutely no mechanical experience and normal hand tools. Good Luck

What kind of symptoms did you all have before your starter's went? For the last couple of months my car makes a funny noise when starting in the morning and it seems like the battery is week but I had the battery checked twice and it's good.

There is a used car parts place on 128(and 95) by exit 27(waltham). I've never been there, but they look big. All depends where you live in Mass.

I replaced my starter today also. I only have 47000 miles on my 98. I have heard of alot of starter problems. The dealer in Memphis quoted me $405 + tax to replace the starter.
