Setting Idle Speed?

I'm looking for the correct way to set the idle speed on my '95 Maxima GLE. I have seen two procedures for doing this and they weren't the same. One procedure says to set the idle speed (with the adjusting screw on the Idle Air Control Valve) after warming the engine up, shutting down, and then restarting with the connector to the IAC disconnected. Another said to adjust it after shutting down the engine, putting the computer in diagnostic mode and then restarting the engine with the computer still in the diagnostic mode (can that be right?).

I tried the method of disconnecting the connector at the IAC but the idle was a lot higher (about 1200 RPM) with the IAC disconnected. That wasn't what I would have expected.

Anyone know the proper way to do this?

I'm new to this forum and can't seem to be able to do a search for some reason.

Warm up the car.

Shut it off and disconnect the TPS.

Start the car and rev it a couple of times.

Set the idle with the screw on the IACV.

Turn the car off.

Plug in the TPS.

You're done.
