Auto tranny is dying, whats the problem?

its leaking fluid randomly (sometimes fast and sometimes super slow) and I have to get the rpms up to 3k in order for it to engage into every gear. I drove it to AAMCO which was about 12 mins away on the freeway and once I got on the street again, it was working just fine. Still leaking super slow though. anyone have a clue what could be wrong?

Its sounds like its slipping, the starting of the legendary dying auto tranny. Start saving for a new one, rebuild, or 5 speed swap. They all die eventually.

damn that sucks, the tranny only has about 70k miles on it. the car had already grenaded its orignal tranny at 101k miles and had one with 40k miles installed 30k miles ago. this **** is f'd up.

also, is AAMCO a good place to take it to? thanks

I think its time to swap, auto trannys on the max tend to suck in general, mine has 50k miles on it and I can already feel it wearing out slowly.

Really varies, some people have done it for under $1500, some have spent $3000+, it all matters upon how cheap you can find the parts, what condition the tranny will be in when you get it, and if you do the work yourself or have a shop do it.

No AAMCO isn't a good place to take it. The dealer is probably your only best bet. Not knocking on AAMCO.. but have you ever watched some of these places put together a tranny? its like a assembly line. How many places have you seen do hydrolic pressure test on these things?

From the sounds of your tranny, you probably burnt up your clutch plates. Its time for a new tranny.. Sorry. Have you had the transmission serviced before this started to happen? They probably put in the wrong fluid if you had it done.

your tranny= na na na na hey hey hey goodbye

if you go to the dealer your going to have to sell your liver and spleen to pay them.

find a reputable national chain that will give a 12 month warranty. i used mr transmission and they were very nice even though i was probably an ***. 8 months later and i have no issues

good luck

lol, even though it sucks, i can't help but laugh at your reply. AAMCO said they'd give me a 36 month/36K mile warrenty (12 months while in GA) so I'ma just go with them and the guy I talked to there didn't seem like he was pulling my leg.

id go that route too, unfortunatly with auto trannies, short of being a rocket scientist its hard to tell what they are talking about. my tranny guy would start talking about the different tranny parts and my eyes would just glaze over and this is after i installed the vb myself

it seems to me that the 5spd can handle much more power than the auto. the problem as i understand it is that the 5spd usually needs to be rebuilt around 100k mi for around $1k, compared to my auto for instance that needed rebuilt at 70k mi for $1600.

i think that is said(auto stronger) becuase the failing 5spd seems to be more assured than the auto which is more of a ticking time bomb.
