91 octane

no you dont have to use the top gas, many on the org and probably the bulk of maxima owners use the normal grade gas.

Myself i've always used premium though.

I believe the Maxima calls for 92+ octane.

For the best mileage and performance use 91. Using less will result in slightly degraded performance and mileage. Please don't make me go into my horrible pompous lecture mode...just trust me!

wouldn't you use premium (93) for best performance and gas mileage?

yeah I think 91 would be good enough, I personally use either 93 or 92 because it's the only thing higher then 89 over here. Our motors run 10:1 compression so keep the knock away we must run high octane, if we run low octane the Knock Sensor will pull the timing to eliminate knock. Then you will end up prolly running rich and not getting enought power, so you gas milage is going to drop. Also running low octane could cause O2 sensors to go out prematurly.

I'm having to use 89 octain, i'm not willing to pay $2.39 a gallon! Californina gas prices are through the roof!!

No. Your ECU will only advance the timing so far. The factory recommendations for octane are usually conservative anyway, so you are wasting your money running more. That's why people running race gas in a car that is not tuned to take advantage of it are a joke. It doesn't do anything unless you are set up to take advantage of it.

What octane do I run? ALWAYS 94... Actually Sunoco is going to "Ultra 93" now...hurt that there's no more 94. It IS a waste of money though, unless you want to consider this...

I have a '98 and the manual said if 91 isnt aviable, 87 would do just fine. last week i fill my tank with 89--Special from Mobil.

Gasoline Grades

I have been using 87 octane at times..the next one up here is 89 (at least 10c more per gallon), then the high grade is 92 or usually 93 Octane for another 10c per gallon.

A the car got older the knock sensor/oxugen sensor at times would indicate a check engine light.

After pouring in a "cleaner" and resetting the check engine light the problems seem to go away. Also at times (especially when it is really cold) I use tank of 93 octane. Lately I mix 93 and 87 half & half.

The "power" is somewhat less but it works OK.

look people i repair commercial lines and i know, the guys i shoot the **** with tell me if they are doing a dump load at a station and filled the low grade up and have no where else to dump the rest thell put it into the premium tanks no word of a lie.. guys do it so often that when you pay for that premium your getting poor gas mixed with regular fuel you pay for premium and your really getting 87 octane!! besides! you wont notice 93 octance in our car unles sits boosted anyway!!!! save your money.

i run 87 in my z06 and it runs perfict dont bother using high octane if the car doesnt prematurely fire or "ping" usually in that vette i lik e to put 3/4 87 and 1/4 94 to balance the octanes at least but still you nvr know what octane is truely in those pumps
