What R signs of a failing Transmission: Auto

What are some signs that your transmission is about to go?

Winter seasons finally letting up a little and Im back into Spring maintenance mode. Noticed that the engine sounds a little grungee, like a "thu thu thu thu" instead of her typical "Purrrrrr" at idle. Haven't cleaned the TB in a while and Im sure the intakes dirty, but not sure if this is the cause for Maxeens attitude. Shes at 141k, would like some feedback.

Thanks!

Mine is at 141 k, at around 125, i noticed that it was getting harder and harder for it to get into forth gear. Eventually it stopped going into 4. Then slowly 3rd was beginning to go, then it went. At that point I was driving on 2 gears. What happened was that my tranny wasn't being cooled, and the gears slowly burned down. Those are some of the symptoms that the tranny is about to go.

Hey VP358,
Thanks for your input. Can't say that I have any trouble getting to my higher gears, BUT (thanks for reminding me…should've mentioned this earlier), I have noticed that Maxeen tends to have prob coming down from 2nd to 1st during stop and go traffic. When it happens it's usually with a thud, not at all unlike what you get with the infamous Resistor Mod. Does anyone think that’s a sign too? Perhaps my tranny fluid needs changing.

if your want to try to help it, try adding an inline tranny cooler and doing a tranny flush. they say a VB mob helps extend a tranny's life...heh good luck

I have some bad news my friend. That thud does not sound good to me. I have a 98 SE with 105k miles. At 99k I had the tranny totally skipping 2nd and going directly into 3rd. It started by making that same noise you are talking about and then finally I noticed the revs and power were not where they should have been. It was really expensive ($3,500) for a factory rebuilt from the stealership. I am sure you can go to a tranny shop and get it fixed for a lot cheeper. Definately have it checked out if you feel power and gear shifting problems. Last thing you want is to get stuck.

GO GATORS!

Mine has always had the odd shifting in traffic from 2nd to 1st at slow speed. Like rolliing a yield sign it never drops back into first unless I stop. (I would NEVER roll a stop sign....)

Shifts fine otherwise and it is getting no worse over the last 15K.

Any input?

I don't really have a solution for you but my 96' max has 164,000 miles on it and i just got the induction service done to it recently and it runs a lot smoother than it use to.

Mine has never made any noises or anything when going from 2nd to 1st but it does do that whole not switching to 1st when i am going through a yeild.

However, now that i think about...whenever i peel out in the rain or snow for a long time and i stop and go again my car will start and keep itself in 3rd gear only until i shut off my car and start it back up again. Can't explain that one either!!!!

hey 96prlwtmaxse, does your O/D flash when you restart your car after it just stays in 3rd gear? I've had that problem too. And now I think my car has forgotten 4th gear altogether. It doesnt seem to drop down into 4th like it should...Im getting worried.

My 99 with 80K doing the same thing(2nd to 1st when slow/rolling yield). Flushed tranny with AMS oil synthetic, no change. I had owned a auto Mazda 323 before that did the same thing, tranny shop checked it out, turned out to be a solenoid($70 repair). Car worked great afterwards. I think that is the next thing I will check out.

If you spin your tires to the point that it may damage something, it locks out 3 and 4, thats normal, its to prevent damage, some kind of failsafe mode. I think its in the manual, get out of it by shutting off and restarting it.

The tranny not shifting all the way down is also normal im pretty sure, having to do with crappy shift logic. It has been discussed at length before and im pretty sure its normal so im not worried about it, i just got used to it.

i just passed 100k last month. i have an automatically but i always manual shift into the gear i desire that suits whatever mph i'm going at. tranny still shifts accurately into every gear.

if my tranny can last till 150k i'll be very happy.
