i own a 98 max and i am looking to upgrade my stock exhuast to either a muffler or cat back....all i want is the deep sound and it to look good...i am not lookin to spend alot....if my pipes are not rusted i will just pick up a muffler but if they r rusted i will prolly end up buyin a catback...what brands will give me a deep sound after the exhuast upgrade? any brands u recommend me NOT buying....???

For a catback...it seems like greddy has a nice and deep growl. for mufflers, it seems like magnaflow is a very popular choice. Just browse around...there is always talk about different exhaust set ups.

I have a 98 and I just put a Stillen Muffler section on it. The car isn't extremely loud but sound powerful. It doesn't gasp for air when you let off and it get's really throaty around 2500rpms. I would reccomend Stillen if you want to spend the money. I'm sure with the rest of the exhuast (Y pipe back) would make the muffler come to attention

Go custom 2.5" piping and a Dynomax super turbo muffler. Thats what I have and I get nothing but complements on how it sounds. Very deep and no rice at all.

I had someone out of no where complement me on my exhaust after I parked my car, that was last night. I had my exhaust put on yesterday in the morning.

I had a magnaflow muffler and a glasspack (neither of which restricted flow) and it was very deep and mean, but not very loud compared to most cars with modified exhausts. Was great except for a bit of drone going up steep hills at low rpm's. I had to switch out the glasspack for a turbo muffler though, the local police have nothing better to do than ticket anything that doesn't sound stock.

any comments on pacesetter's cat-back? They seem to be really cheap on ebay, and I'd search, but search is down. I've seen good reviews on their short-throw shifter, but nothing on their cat-backs ...

greddy has a lot of drone in the cabin on uphills and low rpm. but from the outside its sounds very deep. i think exhausts on maximas are useless, cause the intake sound takes over after 3k rpm. but thats just my opin

p.s. i heard that the 5th gen exhaust is deep and quite.

Pacesetter is really cheap..a fellow orger had one (I think metallic97gxe) and it rusted through rather quick. They aren't a good investment IMO. I had a glass pack given to me, went out and spent $12 on a tip from Wal-Mart, threw it on the glass pack, and then put that on as my muffler. Cheap, straight through, sounds like any other straight through muffler. All I had to buy was the tip. Shouldnt cost more than $40 really. The eBay bolt on mufflers have been recommended.

1) Why waste the money on a catback or a muffler that gains you maybe 3-5fwhp when you could add y-pipe and gain 10-12fwhp?

2) All catbacks and aftermarket mufflers sound pretty dang good on a 4th gen with the stock y-pipe.

3) All catback and aftermarket mufflers sound pretty dang disgusting on a 4th gen with an aftermarket y-pipe.

True Dave, as always. However my apexi is getting a lot less raspier since I wrapped the flex. My friend, he likes his cars QUIET, actually complimented it when he rode in the car last week. From the outside though it's kinda BLAH.

Non-straight through mufflers will probably sound better than the straight through ones(magnaflow, apex, greddy). Make sure the muffler itself is HUGE(apex) and not a cannister style(greddy).

If you check out the Group Deals, there's a cat-back setup from Megan Racing selling for under $300 I believe. Personally I've never heard a Megan Racing exhaust - does anyone know how it sounds?
