I heard through www.maximadriver.com that the automatic transmissions in the 4 gens go bad after a few years if you drive it hard. Has anybody else heard this and is it true? My friend is strongly considering selling his 99 se auto b/c of this, any info will help

It's a 99. I don't think he'll have problems with it. Get a tranny cooler and all should be good. Lot's of people have 4gen autos with other 100k miles and they are still running strong.
But some people have had problems with the auto tranny.

Yes, this is true. It is also true for any other kind of automatic transmission. "Drive it hard" = abuse.

Your friend could buy a car with a 5-speed. Then he will burn out the clutch. "Drive it hard" = abuse.

You can get a tranny cooler for around $40-$50. It helps keep the tranny fluid cooler. Cause heat is what causes mechanical fatigue and breakdown.

How to install:

Doesn't the '95+ Maxima have an auto tranny cooler already. I thought that that was what the 'bottom' of the 'radiator' already was.

I would definitely say that I "drive hard". But as others have mentioned, I don't abuse it. I've never had one single problem with my tranny. I'm getting a tranny cooler soon so I'll get another 100k trouble free miles.

Yup the car does come with tranny cooler/bottom of radiator but having an Additional cooler in series with stock would allow more cooling of the tranny fluid. I have this on my '99 and while install concept is easy it's just a bit hard to position the cooler in place because of space.

Thanks for the reply. I though that I was going nuts. We had a AT cooler discussion last week or so and then everyone is saying that they were going to install an AT cooler...
