I'm planning to fix my starter, but the vbx site tells how to take out the old starter and install a new one, but I want to regrease it like someone said a while back. Does regreasing the starter fix the problem or just stop the noise. Also, how do I regrease it.

My next question is about my K&N cone filter intake. On my stock airbox, there was some type of sensor screwed into the box. When I put the cone on, my check engine light came on. I don't have an intake adapter. Could this be the problem. Does the adapter have a place for this sensor?

I can't help you with the starter, but I can tell you about the sensor. It is an air temperature sensor, and you need it. If you unplugged it, that could be why you got the check engine light. I drilled a hole in the end of my cone filter and screwed it in there, but I know some people just leave it hanging. As far as I know, there aren't any adapters that have a spot for it, but the Stillen filters have a spot for it. Mine didn't because it was for a different year.

I believe the sensor you're reffering to is the air temp sensor. If you just have a filter and the adapter doesn't have a place for the filter, you're gonna have to drill a hole into the base of the filter itself somewhere and screw the sensor in. Go to Jeff K's website integra.vtec.net/geeser/megamax for step by step directions on how to do this. Hope this helps.

Depends where you regrease it and depends on what is wrong w/ your starter to begin with. The part you have to "regrease"(if it's even necessary) is the spring and the gear shaft(or plumger). It will have grease on it when you take it apart. The other part you should be concerned about is the contacts on the solenoid on top of the starter. If the contacts are dirty or pitted, you will not get a full charge to the starter. Sometimes you can just turn the contacts around and have basicly a new solenoid. Or you might have to clean the contacts a small file or some sandpaper.

If you have the stater apart anyway, inspect the two bearings that the motor rides on and make sure the motor brushes look good. If some or all of these look really bad, it might not be worth it to fix it.

worth it

I took my car to the local nissan dealer and they tried to charge me $500 plus labor, which i know is ridiculous.

Re: worth it

Maybe you shouldn't get a price from your local Nissan dealer. If you insist on a Nissan one, at least buy it from Courtesy or similar discount Nissan dealer. But I'm gonna say, some of the aftermarket ones are probably just as good. ie...Napa etc... Especially when the OEM Nissan starter for the 4-gen has not proven to be all that reliable anyway. I have 130k on my VE 3-gen and not one problem yet. But then again my car starts in about 1 millisec after I turn the key anyway.

Just curious to see if you clean your engine bay at a car wash or with a garden hose. Reason I ask is because I have heard that cleaning in this manner can cause over time a lot of electrical problems. I,m almost sure that is what caused my alternator to go out before 60K. Thanks.
