They aren't slotted or drilled. They are OEM replacement brakes and after about 1000 miles they started squealing. Is there a way to make them stop?

ok there are little metal pads that go between your brake and the caliper it's called a shim it's a thin peice of metal...make sure it's clean...also if you had your brakes done at a shop make em fix it for you. i had a caliper fixed and paid 40 bucks to have a brake job done on all 4. well they sqeeked when i left and they were ****ed when i brought it back. but they fixed it. there is no reason for sqeeky brakes

Check your shims as he suggested. You also may want to sand your brake pads a little bit when you take them off.

My Max used to be my parents. I bought it from them after they moved out of state. After a brake job at their Nissan dealership started causing squealing especially reverse in the morning, woke up the neighborhood, they had them redo the brakes four times and they couldn't get rid of the squeals. When I got the car from them it had been sitting in their garage here for about 4 months. I haven't had a problem with noise, can't explain why.

I wonder if they may have had a caliper sticking. It seems to be a popular thing with our cars.

well last summer I put on brembo dimpl/slot rotors and ebc green pads upfront and raysbestos pads in rear the whole setup sqeeled like a stuck pig for about 2 weeks till I finally had enough..... now there are no shims for this setup I went too autozone and they have this goop glue stuff for squeeking brakes I unfortunately had too take everything apart again too apply too the back of the pads but it worked dramatically no sqeeles too this very day

The shims should have been with the previous pads that you took off. I bet you just accidentally threw them away. The shims have a little thing that sticks out and rubs on the rotor to let you know when your brake pads need to be changed.

yeah I have the same problem as techie... In reverse its a really high pitched squeal thats REALLY loud, and then about 75% of the time as im driving along they make a rubbing noise, sounds like the brakes are sticking... if I tap the brakes kinda hard when theyre making the noise, it'll stop... also, its only coming from the rear... I looked at the pads and they're pretty thin, so I think im just going to replace them, but it sounds like theres a problem with the calipers trying to stick on maximas??

My caliper in the rear sometimes sticks, and I know that I have read other people's posts about the same problem.

Yeah i seem to have the same problem with my front brakes..not the back...i took it in and there was a pebble stuck in the break pad...they removed it but the squeeling is still there when i start braking regularly, a little louder than it should...i have heard of that brake goop stuff but the guy at the shop (the 1 that told me my shim kit needed to be replaced....) told me that that was only a temporary fix....so i never really tried it...

As for the shim kit...he tells me that they come with the purchase of new brake pads...? is this true? or can you buy new ones without buying new pads? cause my pads are brand new...only a few months old...and i guess they kept the old shim kit on?!?!

can someone post a link or a place were i can buy a set of these shim kits? how much do they cost? is it worth it? should i just use the goop?

I ask these questions hopeing to narrow the solution down...i think im not the only one confused on the maxes squeeekky a$$ breaks...

I just did pads, rotors, brake lines, fluid change. I used plenty of some anti-squeal stuff that's red and in a small bottle. I think I got it at Autozone or Advance Auto. I put a lot of it in between the shims and pads. I also used a lot of high-temp synthetic grease where the pads slide in and out. I haven't had any noises so far; it's been about 6 weeks/3500 miles.

check your rotors, check how much brake pad you got left. Also before putting new brakes on always lube up the bolts that hold the caliper (slider ones), check the hardware, and put some antisqeel in between the pad and the metal plate that presses against the caliper (that's what usually helps to fix squeeling).

Don't do your brakes at the dealer. First of all the will rip you off. Second of all they will put the cheapest brake pads that they can find. They don't use the ones that they sell at parts but the CarQuest ones. Other words cheap $hit. I used to work at the dealership so I know.

I have bought a lot of brake pads in my time and they never came with a shim kit. I would imagine that you could buy them from your local Nissan dealer. I have always reused the shims that were there.

http://www.courtesyparts.com/A32_brakes.html I bought the front and rear hardware kit. One of them even came with the "goop" and grease. The only thing not in the front hardware kit was the pad return springs (wishbone-shaped springs that pull the pads from the rotor when you let off). The last person to do the front brakes on my car didn't install them on one side. One pair of brake pads definitely wore faster than the other. I called Nissan, and they said they only sold the springs with the pads; I already had aftermarket pads. I had to buy another shim kit from Autozone that included the springs since that's the only place I could find them. Also check out: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/300.

1. Don't freak out....brake squealing happens to almost everyone....although annoying.
2. Don't take to dealership to do...I too worked at a dealership and know.
3. shims do not come with pads....you have to use your old ones
4. It is not a matter of either shims or goop, you need both
5. Squeal has to do with a lot more things than just goop: it could be the compound of pads, hardness of pads, weird friction on rotor, something in the pad wearing on the rotor.
6. Don't get your rotors machined! I would not recommend wasting your money on this. Just find somewhere that sells them OEM (www.rockauto.com or a local parts store...........should be about $20 each), and put new ones on. The old ones are too thin by the time you machine them even once, and then they warp in less than 1000 miles. Then, you have wasted all that money to get them machined, and you have to get new ones anyway. It is barely more at the price I told you, to get new ones anyway. Trust me, it is worth it. (I think it is like $15/per side to machine...ha ha)
7. Try a different brake pad.....Supposedly, Raybestos Quietstop are highly recommended around the .org.
8. Sometimes, even though it is a pain, just taking the wheel off and taking the brake pads out and then putting them back in is enough to stop what is ailing your car. I know it sounds crazy, but it has worked for me before.

when i installed my brembo x-drilled + hawk HP pads, i followed motorvate's instruction and cleaned my entire brake assembly inside out. i have no squeels or whatsoever now. i don't even get a single squeels when the car is cold and rolling outta the parking lot.

it's just the matter of removing the wheel, take of 2 14mm bolts on the caliper, spray the brake cleaner, put the 14mm bolts back on, put the wheel back. not too hard.

Another thing to consider, when you replace your pads and the rotor is not resurfaced, this will cause your pads to glaze up in a matter of few miles. If this is what happened, remove the pads and the rotor, sand them down with 60 grit to remove the glaze from both and that will fix the problem.

yeah that's why you machine the rotors, but I just replaced mine because the previous owner didn't take care of brakes. Like, Brudaddy said they are dirt cheap!!! You get 4 of them for under 60 at your local parts store!!!

yeah, I was not saying that you don't need to get new or resurfaced rotors, but rather to just get new ones because the old ones will be too thin if you resurface and you will pay slightly less than just getting all new rotors.

Good, suggestion with the brake cleaner though. I might try this out, for the fog horn noise that is common on the rear of maximas.

I just replaced my front brakes in the garage and no squeaks so far! I used oem brakes and the shims off the old pads with plenty of anti-squeal grease. The shim on the piston side had a brass shim and a silver/ aluminum shim on that side. The opposite side shim was just one aluminum shim. Put a bunch of anti-squeal grease in between the pad and all shims on drivers side pad. On the other side I just greased between the piston and the shim. I used new rotors and Bedded the pads in until I could smell the brakes. 99 Max stops very nicely without any noise. Anyone can do brakes!!

Yes you can remove them. The shims are the thin metal pieces that sit behind the brake pads. I am not sure what little wire thing you are referring to.

Does anyone know what type of brakes pads are best for drilled rotors. I need some good pads!

The little wire feelers fit into the pads to keep the pads spread apart when you are not braking. The shims are attached to the back face of the pads.(If you have them) Otherwise you need to order a brake hardware kit from Courtesy Nissan!!
