Body-colored Splash Guards? ? ? ?

Okay...

Does anyone know the process of painting something like the splash guards with a factory color and making it look good yourself? I am wanting to do this myself, but need to know how to go about doing it.

There is a site I was referred to by Jepht, www.paintscratch.com. On here, you can get factory color of touch up and spray paint and clear coat. My color does not have a pearl in it, but I was wondering what all I need to buy before I buy it.

1. I know I have to sand it down
2. I know I have to use some kind of primer...
3. The base coat I will have to put on after that...
4. Then, I will have to put on the clear coat...
5. I am not sure about rubbing compound or anything like that after the clear coat goes on. This is kind of where I get stuck.

If you have painting experience, please help me out.

i'm pretty sure you need the flex additive too so it doesn't crack.

i'd do body color because it flows better and will give your car a lower clean look to it. what if you ever changed your wheels? then the titanium wouldn't really match anymore and might look out of place.

can't wait to see how it looks on your max!

Thanks, Jepht20. I will keep the flex in mind when I do it.

If you have any more pics that are not on your homepage, send them to me at bulrich@bakerdonelson.com or post them here.

That goes for everyone else....if you have pics of body-colored splash guards, post pics here.

any way I do it, I am doing it the po-man's way....myself. ha ha

I think with a little time, I would be able to do it for like $55 or so. I don't want to pay someone $80-100 to do it.

you have to use flex, so it doesn't crack. i did it to mine before i
put the kit . it makes the car look nice and stocky one of my first modds.
make sure you paint it the same color as the car or it will throw off the effect of it being a part of the car...

Definately body colored. You want the eye to go to the wheels not spalsh guards. Splash guards are an accent not a highlight.

I'm going to do the same.

Where did you find them?
Cost?

Thanks,

Mr.P

i wouldn't go with splash guards (personally) they make the car look like a robot. But if you want to put them on your car i would definitely recommend you paint them your car's color. It would look crazy if you painted the flaps a different color of the car. It would kinda look like a cf lip on a maxima. A headturner but give the impression of "why did you do that color?"

But what if we are into the robot look?

Not R2D2, but more HAL...

Brudaddy:
You are referring to the OEM splash guards, correct? The ones that look more of an extension of the body.

That site would not pull up for me, C MAX. Can you post any pics right on here for us?
**sorry about me telling you to post earlier, I guess I didn't see that you had...ha ha**

Yes, I am talking about the OEM ones. They are not very large, and kind of more "stiff" than other cars' mudflaps. These are really cool looking on a black max(because the guards are black too). That is why I was wondering if they would look good on my car too. And if it is a pretty cheap mod, I thought, why not.

I have seen them(the black ones) on a black or sterling mist(my original color choice before I got the Crimson) and they made the cars look really aggressive. IMO, the stockiness of them made the car look totally different.
For those of us that are probably not going to do a body kit, it might just be what the doctor ordered.

takentomax, what do you mean when you say "robot" look? I don't know how to picture a robot being a car(other than the old Porsche Go-Bot I used to have when I was little......do any of you remember those things? I think they were supposed to be like the evel Transformers or something....anyway...I digress.).
Also, I thought you were always in favor of the CF stuff on cars, Takentomax. In the threads, you are always saying that you like. I personally don't like the cf hoods and trunks, but whatever. I somehow think that it might look different if I could come really close to matching the color of the wheels. I don't know. There is already all the badging all around the car that is that color...on mine anyway.

Thanks for the comments, all.
Keep up the good work, and recommendations...

I noticed a maxima with mudflaps on a couple of days ago. This maxima looked alittle more square than usual. What i am trying to say is that the maxima with the mudflaps look alittle more boxy. It's not my style but i could get use to it.

As for the cf thing ,i don't know what i was typing at that time, i was mighty drunk. Don't get me wrong "i love carbon fiber" I have it alova muh car.

I did it the po-mans way and it was pretty easy.

I went to my local advance auto parts store and found a car spray paint that was as close as possible to my color. Its so close thats its pretty hard to determine their not factory.

Steps i took...
1) Cleaned mud gaurds using orange blast
2) Masked off portions i didnt want painted, kinda a PITA
3) Scuffed up mud guard using very fine grit sandpaper
4) Sprayed away
5) Let paint get tacky them removed the masking tape
6) Let dry overnight
7) install and enjoy...

so, no clear coat or anything like that?
I just think the Nissan Crimson Blaze is too hard to match to just go get some spray paint like you did. It has transparent orange, red, and maroon in it. I watched the guy mix it when he painted my bumpers.

hi, the phone number to the guy that painted my mud flaps is: 732 618 0154

he lives in South Jersey somewhere, or south of central jersey u can say. i had REAL OEM mudflaps off of a 4th gen maxima. Mine were used but originally bought from a nissan dealership. The cheap ones...i dont know how well they will hold but anything is possible. I rather go with OEM but if they look close enough, i cant hate . Good price if they do look similar. Anyway, he charges 80 dollars to do painting. I believe turn around time to receive is maybe a week after he receives them from u. Depending on what day he gets them, it will take 2-3 days to paint and dry and 2-3 days for u to get it back. Call it 10 days TOPS to be safe. But tell him mecca with the rosewood maxima sent you.

Also he will need the paint code of your car. If you are close enough to drive then there will be no shipping and he can take it right off the hood of your car. Otherwise u will have to give him that info. He charged me 50 but just cause i promised to spread the word but he said its 80 from now on....

Well, it is just that I could probably do it with the www.paintscratch.com that I was told about. They mix it to Crimson Blaze, and then I would be able to do it myself.

Torgus....I would probably just have some guys do it here in town that I know for the same price minus the shipping before I sent it all the way to Jersey from Mississippi. Thanks for the offer though. Good idea. I appreciate you trying to help out, man.

Good luck getting the paint to stick for an extended period of time. The flexible nature of mudflaps causes painted to crack and eventually come off. My friend has a civic si that he wanted to get this done to and the body shop we all use said that they wouldn't guarantee the work because they have tried it in the past and it didn't last. I have seen people try to paint stock side skirts on hondas that are unpainted and the same thing happens. Later

Apparently nobody's answered the question although it's already been asked several times:

WHERE CAN WE BUY MUDFLAPS? I'm talking about the OEM Nissan ones, unless someone knows of an aftermarket type that looks even better. If no one knows of places online, how much could one expect to pay for a set of four OEM mudflaps at your local Nissan dealer? Thanks!

www.rockauto.com sells them online. I can save you about half of your shipping with this savings code:

You give this discount code: 8311393101 to friends, neighbors,
relatives, the guy at the corner garage--anyone you know who
works on cars or trucks.
- When someone places an order at www.rockauto.com and enters
your discount code in the "How did you hear about us" line of
the shopping cart, he or she will receive an immediate 5%
discount on that order.
- The discount code expires on May 11, 2004; so don't wait!

**Each month we see people who put the word "discount" in front
of their code and do not get the discount. Please enter ONLY the
discount code.**

I have ordered from them before, and they are good and fast. Stuff I have gotten from them is quality. Try them out.

Thanks, I went there and it looks like a good store, but I couldn't find mud flaps. I looked under 1995 through 1999 Nissan Maxima, subheading Body-Exterior and didn't see anything except under Fender "splash guards". It's a shame they don't have photos.... Do you know where they are on the site?

i highly recommend body color mudgaurds. I recommend mudguards to anyone and everyone that does not have a kit. It makes car look a little lower and just adds a special touch to it. Mudguards with a front lip, now thats pimp

Nice page, meccanoble. Thanks for the advise. I like the way the mud guards look on your car. I also agree with you about not having a kit on your car, it makes it look better. I think I will do that, but will probably wait until this summer.

Jepht20, I know it doesn't matter what others think. I am just getting a feel and some feedback from other people. I know what I want already, just curious of the opinions of others.

You're putting them on. I took them off. Somethings not right here. I don't think they look good at all. If you need that thats a different story but I doubt you need them in Jackson.
