Anyone else had a Vehicle Speed Sensor Problem
I have been fighting with my vehicle speed sensor in my 96 SE 5-spd for about a month now, and wanted to know if anyone else has had a problem with their vehicle speed sensor. The symptoms I have are the following:
MIL on DTC 0104 (P0500) which indicated a bad speed senor
Cruise control will not engage, or stops working shortly after engaging.
When the MIL first came on I ordered a new vehicle speed sensor, and installed it and cleared the compter without doing any other tests, but about 100 miles later the MIL came back on with a stored code for the vehicle speed sensor.
The problem is intermittent, and it usually takes about 100 miles of driving for the MIL to turn on after clearing the code from the computer. The problems with the cruise control occur regardless of the MIL status. The speedometer moves smoothly and works fine.
My local dealer Nissan dealer (Gandrud Nissan) was kind enough to photocopy the vehicle speed sensor and cruise control diagnostic sections from the factory manual for me. I followed the procedures in the factory service manual checking for open circuits and shorts in the VSS wires going to the speedometer and from the speedometer to the computer and found no problems.
Anyone have any ideas before I bring it in to have the dealer fix it?

Just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one who has this problem, though solutions may be different....
