Rebuilding rear brake calipers - problem
Rebuilding rear brake calipers - problem
Firstly, how do you get the snap rings out of the caliper body once the piston is out? I could find no snapring pliers that would fit. I wound up taking the snallest set I had and modifying them with a grinder and vice so that it would snake around the caliper backplate and down between the cylinder wall and threaded rod... And removing the threaded rod was a nightmare also, so I made a tool out of 3/4 steel box tube and slightly flattening the end with a hammer so that it fit over the rod and grabbed the two-sided nut at the bottom...
Anyways - getting hold of a rebuild kit is turning out to be quite a challenge. The kit that I eventually got from Napa (after ordering online from Advance Auto (PartsAmerica) and being sent a 30-day backorder notice) had an extra pisto that I don't need, and didn't have the handbrake lever boot (for the lever on the caliper that tis actuated by the handbrake lever.
I figured out what happened to the rear caliper... The boot had failed and allowed water into the caliper. There is an inverted cam-style pushrod that pushes the caliper piston into the pad when the handbrake level is rotated - this cam/pushrod assembly started to rust out and got caked in dust/dirt etc, caugin the caliper piston to not retract correctly upon releasing the handbrake. The additional heat from the dragging caliper melted the main piston dust boot and caused it to sieze.
Once I get this kit and rebuild the two rear calipers I'll be back on the road. The fronts were easy to do.
Anyone know where to get the kit? Should I just go to Nissan?
