benefits or results of y-pipe

I am new to the performance aspect of tuning cars, this is the first non-bmw vehicle I have ever had, and must say that I am extremely impressed with what Nissan has done with this car. I have a 95 Se, with 5spd tranny. I am wanting to do some minor things to help boost performance, but dont know what the y-pipe is going to do for my car or the benefits of having it. I live in Texas and they just started doing those smog tests here a few years ago, is a y-pipe going to hinder that emissions test? Thank you for all of your input.

rumors of 10-15hp at the wheels, much more mid to high range pull, better sounding vehicle, i would assume better gas milage if you arent on it constantly, as well as more longevity from your exhaust as most aftermarket y pipes are stainless or aluminized steel. It should not mess your emissions up as long as a catalytic converter is utilized...

Congrats on the max
and welcome to not paying too much for a name
-cheers

OH man, get the ypipe. You'll love the maxima more, it pulls so much harder on the highway now. Enjoy that 5spd!

I moved here from London about 3 years ago and BMW was all my family ever knew to buy. I am loving this car though, it runs smooth drives strong and even though it is almost 10 years old, it still looks really good.. I dont see what could keep me from buying another in the future. Thanks for your input

does anyone have an audio or video clip of a max with the y-pipe on it. I know that people have said that it sounds good, but I really dont want a rice sound. something subtle.

i passed CA smog with warpspeed y-pipe. u shouldn't have any problem in TX. just make sure ur catalytic convertor is well warmed up before the smogging and you should be fine.

I didn't want anything ricey either, and I got one. It sounds great. I have a 5th gen muffler on there, but if you kept the stock one on there, it would probably be barely louder than stock, if any.

For a little added power even to the y-pipe and not hard to do, get a custom built 2.5" b-pipe(after the cat, back to the muffler). This will add probably another 3-5hp to the already added 15-20 hp from the y-pipe. Even with my different muffler, large b-pipe, and the y-pipe, it is not loud. It sounds just like a little more beefy engine.

(you ought to be able to get the b-pipe done for like $50 at a muffler shop there in your area.)
So, that with the y-pipe(www.budgetexhaust.com or Warpspeed group deal right now for $160 shipped....that is what I did)......you will be looking at barely over $200 for all that. It is well worth it. No other mods will give you that kind of yeild.

A y-pipe does not add up to 20hp, people have this common misconception. 10-15hp TOPS...

And a custom made B-pipe should run you around 100 bucks w/ resonator.

zealotnyc, I didn't get it yet. I will hopefully soon though.

99maxima5spd, that is just about right on for the custom b-pipe. I didn't have a resonator put in mine, I just used the stockie. The resonator is about $50 alone.
I was not talking about fwhp anyway. I thought that it did produce like 15-20 hp at the crank? I know that is is faulty to talk about hp at the crank, but our 190 hp from the factory is rated from the crank.

EastTexasMax, you are going to have to be pretty good with a welder and torch. You have to do this to get the new b-pipe on there. I would just say take it to the muffler shop in town that gives you the best price and get it over with.

y-pipe is biggest gain of mod besides forced induction.

My y-pipe barely increased the sound of my car at all. You have to go to the back of the car and get low near the exhaust and you will hear a little burble.

all you need is a cherry bomb for a resonator. Go to meijer or a walmart and you can find them. Thats all they are... resonators.

you cant get any increase by focusing on output only. first upgrade the intake. i suggest a cold air.
