odometer acting up grrrrrrrrrr

fer the last couple months my odometer will move along happily for 7 or 8 miles or so then stop. wont move a bit for rest of the day / next morning rinse and repeat. the colder the day it seems it may go for an extra mile or so. I tried to take out the gauge cluster to clean ect but got stopped on the steering covers (need better tools) probably. one screw on rear right side i could not get to .
anyway if i was to get the cluster out what should i look for?>
