Help Transmission cooler needs changing

Hey Guys,

I need some advice, I saw some tranny oil leaking from the inlet hose of the tranny cooler, thought it was a bad clamp. No it could never be that easy!!! The Inlet nipple had corroded and broke while I was trying to remove the hose. Now I'mnot sure what to do. Is ispossible to remove old cooler or shouldI just re-route the hose to a new cooler in front of the rad? Please, help!

I'd just go to Advance and get yourself a new tranny cooler. The one they carry is probably Imperial brand, but if you take it out of the box and look at it, you will see that it is in fact the Hayden brand cooler. This will also let your tranny shift quicker (and a little harder) since the oil is not running so hot anymore. Here is a link to the install: Tranny cooler install

Good luck, let me know if you have any problems!

Drew,

Thanks for your advice, I saw the write up before, you did an excellent job. The problem is I am vacationing in Canada right now so I don't think I can get a Hayden but if you could give me an estimate of the dimensions, I can try to get a similar cooler in Canada. Secondly ,you did yours in series with the stock, I would bypass my stock cause I think it is inside the rad, any problems with inadequate cooling you think?

I'm not sure about the specs of the stock cooler. Your best bet is to go to an auto store and have them look up your radiator and maybe they can tell you those specs. Then get an external tranny cooler with better specs than the stock one. This will ensure that you get enough cooling

I just ordered a Hayden 403 tranny cooler (GVW up to 18,000 lbs. 7 1/2" x 12 1/2" x 3/4") and I'll use that in series with the stock. Most people with the VB mod are using the 404 (GVW to 22,000 lbs. 7 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 3/4") in series with stock. Since you're not using the stock cooler, get the 404 equivalent or maybe even the 405 equivalent (GVW to 26,000 lbs. 10" x 15 1/2" x 3/4").

Get the stock cooler specs first before you buy.

Just a suggestion, but I would buy a B&M vs the Hayden.

First the B&M is a stacked plate design and is not only much more sturdy but also more efficient that the Hayden coil and fin design.

Second the B&M has a Velocity Controlled Orifice which will bypass the fluid until it heats up and regardless of the size you buy (I bought the largest one they had, the 24,000 GVW) the fluid will never be too cold even in the winter because of this velocity controlled orifice feature.

BTW If you are in Canada they are sold in all Canadian Tire Stores. They aren't called B&M but it is the only type they sell.

I have run this cooler as my only cooler in three different Maxima's all of which I race and I bypass the stock cooler by choice. I realize you don't have much choice, but just so you know that it will not cause problems.

Mine is 11"x11"x3/4"
