A/C expansion valve, hard to replace?

Has anyone replaced their expansion valve? Everything else seems to check out with my A/C, yet it doesn't cool effectively enough. A mechanic told me it required "ripping apart" the whole dash, was time consuming, and would cost a lot of money for him to do it for me. I found out the part is only about $50, so if I could do this myself, that's not too bad. I couldn't find anything in the how-to's about this. Is this something I can do?
P.S. My brother-in-law has all the necessary equipment to work on A/C, but doesn't know the Maxima in particular (domestic only ). And, I know, I need to get a manual (Haynes or Chilton).

Has anyone done this? It's getting warm now. My two yr. old son, and pregnant wife would like some A/C. Should I just take it to a mechanic and bend over?
