yo, i know it could be a number of things but what is your best guess on this engine light check.
it is a 95 se auto with only 63,000 miles on it. i baby this car!
i need a oil change but damn! i do hear a strange noise everytime i start the engine. after it turns over it makes a slight grinding noise. any suggestions before i take it to the dealer? i've been driving it for a week with the light on and it's running great.

Best guess? It makes no sense to play guessing games when you can find out for sure. You will find instructions to do a DTC readout and reset the Check Engine light at:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html

The DTC "translations" are found at:
http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html

Grinding is starter

I get a slight grinding when i start it only when it is cold...the shaft in the starter isnt throwing itself back fast enough and its getting caught up on the flyweel...you can get a rebuilt starter but i got A rebuilt at 60K and i have 87K on it now...it must have been a bad rebuilt....on regards to the light...mine is on too im gettin it looked at on friday when i checked what it was it came up to a SMALL gas leak...i got a new gas cap but it still came on after i turned it off again....it must be a small leak back by the gas tank on one of the circulation lines./..it could be alot of different things for yours...make sure you didnt open up the gas cap with the engine running cause it will turn on for that....oh yea i got a 96 se

Loose gas cap

A loose or missing fuel filler cap will set a Diagnostic Trouble Code, but this is a "two trip" failure. The Engine Control Module tests the fuel system for leaks periodically and won't turn on the Malfunction Indicator Light unless your fuel system fails the test on two successive trips.

Might want to try resetting the ECU and see if it comes back. If it does then you DEFINATELY have a problem.
