The Maxima Shake

Is there a problem with the 4th gens shaking alot at high speeds, like above 60mph? I've heard of other people having the problem, and alignments and wheel balancing didn't help. Is there a solution to this?

im trying to figure it out right now. my 99gxe shakes horribly at high speeds and is becoming more apparent to me at lower speeds. especially when braking i can feel it.

rotors would cause it to shake even without braking?

no, if it was rotors, it would vibrate only when braking unless it was extremly severe, but then you would be able to visually notice it, also if it was your rotors you would notice your pedal pulasting. Tighten up your wheel lugs and that should solve most of your problem

Welcome to the Maxima Shake Club. This "is" common for 4th generation Maximas. I have had this shake since I bought my Max with 29K on it. Many of the people on this board complain about this. No, it's not the rotors. It's not the struts either. No one seems to know what it is. It's just inherent in the 4th generation Max's. However, I have had my tires balanced on a Hunter Roadforce machine (high speed balancing) and this does improve it, but does not eliminate the problem. Just try and get used to it. I had to. Still love my Max though...shakes or not!

Perhaps our front wheel drive set up has something to do with it. I also have an Acura Vigor and that thing has no vibration at all.

Hey guys! its interesting to find this being the most recent topic to be talked about right now. I have just started to notice this shake on my 97 max. with 117K on it. I have never had this problem before and now its just there after getting a balancing job done. The werid thing is that sometimes its more noticeable then others and so i am 60% sure its not the balanceing job but i am probably going to get my tires balanced again by nissan in a few weeks when i take it in for a tune up. I hate the shaking though....its bascially a vibration on the steering wheel and it feels like something that would happen when your tie rods are going back or rack and pinioun is going bad.

Hey! just thought of something....how many of you guys with this shaking problem have had your knock sensor replaced or have done it themselves?

I just thought of a theory which might be causing this shaking....bascially i am thinking if the torque was not set properly...it might be causing knocking without the knock sensor preventing it and that would definately cause the car to shake. The higher the RPM the more it would shake....let me know what you guys think!

i still have very minor shaking at very high speed AFTER i got an alignment done, wheel balanced, and suspension mods.

all my camber were fixed to stock spec. IMO it's just my car getting too old... but i don't mind though. cuz it's really hard to notice the shaking. so it's all good

I dont know... that might be the reason, but I am only doing 2300 rpms @ 80 MPH in 4th gear. I dont feel that vibration when I am doing 2000-3000 rpms around town in a lower gear like first or second. So that leads me to believe that it is wheel speed related and not engine speed related. But you never know... you might be right.

i have a feeling i need an alignment...i know the camber isn't out cause i don't have unusual tire wear...might be tow. i really don't know. it's really noticeable at speeds over 60, and it's terrible over 75. guess i'll just have to get used to it then.

the knock sensor would not create this type of issue. most likely it is suspension/tire related, there are many wear parts in the suspension obviously and many things can get over looked

I guess im gonna have all 4 balanced. wondering.. what is the name of the machine that I'm supposed to look for when getting a balancing job, and also an alignment job done?

my problem started when i rotated the tires and got them balanced. So what in rotation causes it to make it shake? and eventually it should go away after you drive enough cause it will wear the tires again in the same patern. Well i guess that explains it...

I think I have pinpointed my prob. If you look at my car head on, there is a pretty big gap between the hood. (It did have a front end acident...previous owner)) Once I get goin 60+ it starts to vibrate. Most of the time I cant even feel it, but I always see it. There have been time when I feel it more, but it doesnt really bug me but you might want to check it out on yours.

My car was pulling to the left and shaking at high speeds so I took it in and got an alignment and balance. I still had the same problem until just recently when I rotated the tyres(front right to left back etc.) Now the car runs straight and silky smooth. I got so used to compensating for the pulling left that when it was fixed, I found myself pulling too hard right and too easy left

My Maxima has had these shakes since I can remember, even before any of the modding. I tried changing the rims around, balancing many, many times, alignments(many as well), new rims, played with tire pressure. The shakes were still there after getting my new suspension installed. I have just learned to live with it .

if you have aftermarket wheels on your max then get a hubcentric wheel adapter with it. And make sure you torque them down to proper specs. Improper torquing of the wheel causes the rotors to warp and there is a slight misalignment that occurs that usaully results to vibrations on higher speeds. And also....NEVER LET A SHOP USE AN IMPACT GUN TO TIGHTEN YOUR WHEEL LUGNUTS!!!!

I also have a Mazda Millenia - solid as a rock - at ALL speeds! Let's just face it folks, some cars are built better (suspension-wise) than others. The Maxima is not know for having a tight suspension. Everyone I know that has a similar Maxima has this problem. Like I mentioned before, it's inherent in the suspension and we can end up spending a load a cash trying to correct the problem. I have given up, saved my money for more useful things, and accepted it.

Still love my Max though!

97 bought 800 miles ago. I have it somewhat around 80 mph (zero shaking on my 00). I've not done a balancing (which would merely pull the problem to the back) or rotation or alignment, but I may get that done.

UPDATE:
just went to tire kingdom and had them throw my tires on the hunter (i have stock 15's and stock suspension btw), and also check the alignment. The toe was out a couple degrees possibly from the woman hitting something hard, so i had them fix that... it seemed like that would have been the problem, yes? NO!! STILL VIBRATES. I called them and am taking it back in, and the manager said he would go for a ride with me to feel what its doing and hes gonna work on it from now on.

i'll keep you guys posted.

Worn CV joints can cause vibration at speed. I had the same problem until I replaced the drive axles with new ones from raxles.com when I did the tranny swap. They cost more ($320) but they're worth it.

How's your brake, does it pulsate a little when braking? If so it may be the cause, try having it cut with an onboard lathe where they attach the lathe itself on the hub to cut the rotors.

hmm brakes could be the cause of the wobbling even when im not even braking? interesting. thanks for the tip EZE. i wonder how much a shop would charge for that...
