newbie questions about rims and struts/springs
ok this is my first post, just bought a 97, so hello everyone, now my questions are, 1. i plan on getting some 19's and was wondering what sizes everyone recommends, and i know the car will ride high if i dont lower my car, can you run aftermarket springs with your stock struts? will that hurt the car? thanks
About ur question with suspension, technically you can drop your car with stock shocks but believe me, you won't like the ride. Especially with 19s, that contributes to the ride quality, negatively. So I strongly recommend that you get aftermarket shocks with your new springs. If you don't have the money then try lowering your car first, properly, and then get the 19s later on. That's my $.02. And btw, welcome to the org.
Hello, welcome to the org.
My first suggestion is for you to read as many of the (Sticky's, Fact's etc.) you will find a great deal of information in them regarding most of your questions.
What I want to make you aware of is you need to first decide what your plans are for your vehicle. Are you going for looks, performance or looks & performance?
(WHEELS)
If you want performance then purchase a wheel that is lighter then your stock wheels.
If you want looks then 19's are deffinitly in my opinion the way to go!
If you want both looks & performance then purchase a 17" rim that is lighter then your factory wheels.
(SUSPENSION)
You can run aftermarket springs on your stock strut's, but most people that do this complain about the struts blowing out quickly. Keep in mind that this is very much related to the road conditions in your area.
Extreme road conditions = earliest failure
Very poor road conditions = earlier failure
Poor road conditions = early failure
Pristine road conditions = eventually failure
As you can see the end result is failure. I drove around on my stock SE strut's with 2" lowering springs for alittle over a year & they never failed. However to achieve the best ride quality it is highly recommended to purchase a set of aftermarket strut's. There are too many brands to list & to many opinions about which are best springs included. You as the owner of the vehicle need to decide what is best for you & is talored for your budget.
If you do decide to go with 19" rims then a 2" drop is about as low as you want to go for every day driving use. I'm sure that more people will see you post & give you more insight regarding which set up is best for you. You might want to include your budget $$$ so others can help you determine what products are the best for your money.
I hope that helps you out alittle bit. Hopefully someone will post the maxmods url so you can read further regarding wheels & suspension? Good luck & don't forget to read the Sticky's.......

im definately going for the show look and want the 19's , would i want to go with the 225 or 245? to tell you the truth i dont know the difference, well if i get the rims first will it hurt the car to roll on the 19's with stock struts and springs?
No, 19" rims will not harm the stock suspension. The difference between 225 & 245 is the width of the tread. I would go with a 225-35-19 VR or Z rated tire. It is less likely to rub against anything. VR & Z rating is the compound rating. Basically it's how soft the tire is. Since your most likely not going to see speeds above 160mph. I would go with the VR rated tire, because it will take longer to wear down. That is if you can get a VR rated 19" tire. They may only come in the Z rated form?
