Sorry about the noob question guys but I'm new to a lot of this. Could someone tell me what the drop resistor mod is and what it does? Thanx in advance to anyone who cares to explain it! If you could even point me in the direction of that info I'd be grateful. Thanx again.
only for auto's. the drop resistor mod will make your transmission run at "maximum line pressure" which will make your shifts very hard and abrupt. there is a resistor on the drivers side strut area, behind your intake that can be disconnected from the transmission circuit. usually it is rigged in such a way that the resistor is only taken out of the circuit when WOT is reached, by a wide open throttle switch or something similar. it should ONLY be used in conjunction with a secondary transmission cooler, and at WOT (part throttle shifts will bang into the next gear too hard). There are a couple writeups about it, might want to check out the Nitrous forum and make sure to read all of the stickys in the 4th gen.

Zazon, a cooler is not required. Less slippage equals cooler temps. The DR makes shifts shorter and therefore tranny cooler. A great mod, especially if you wanna go 5Spd and its free.
recently installed drop resistor mod
my friend and i recently installed the drop resistor mod on his '95 max. the difference is extremely noticeable when not at WOT, but when at WOT the difference isn't all that noticeable(sp*). it is definitely a cool mod for feel and sound of the car when it shifts hard and chirps the tires, but does this mod actually enhance the performance of the car, and if so, what does it do for the car?.. sorry if this is a dumb question, i was just interested
There is much debate about the topic zazon. It is my opinion that less slippage equals cooler temps. I does put more stress on the tranny parts but it certainly does lower temps over stock. Heat is the number one enemy of an auto. Our tranny is very structurally strong but not good at withstanding heat fatigue. This is true of most auto's.
myGNhauls, you are correct that the difference is more pronounced at part throttle. Here's how it works; at part throttle under stock conditions the line pressure is very low to create a very smooth luxurious feeling. This is neccessary because the difference in ratio from first and second is such that the load variation is most pronounced. Each successive gear uses higher line pressure because the driveline shock is less magnified. The engineers knew that the shorter shift the shift equals higher durability. Therefore they flirt on the line of comfort and durability. I'm just pulling these #'s out of my @ss but here we go. Lets say stock the 1-2 is 25% LP, 2-3 55% LP, 3-4 90% LP. Now lets compare that to driving with the DR off. All shifts are 100%. Therefore the largest change in pressure is the most apparent to your @ss and eyeballs on the 1-2. The guessed 10% difference is negligable and goes almost unnoticed at WOT on the 3-4 shift. If you pay close attention you will notice but thats it. Also, you gotta be at 126MPH to do a WOT 3-4 so my guess is must of us don't really pay attention to anything except not dying at that speed. To answer your question, it does help the auto perform better. I even think it helps with downshifts. I have never run a 1/4 with the DR on but others have and consistantly find that switching it off is good for .1-.3 seconds.
