Saturn vs. Maxima

My friends older brother just bought a Saturn SL-2 a few days ago and they're saying it's really fast. They keep bragging about it and whatnot, then today they told me that their brother wants to race me and they continued onto say that he would most likely beat me. Both of our cars are stock...well I know mine is and I'm nearly positive that his is as well. I think those cars have roughly 130hp to speak of but they're also lighter. So would this matchup result in my embarassment or do I have a shot? I love my car and I don't really want it to be put to shame. Mines a 5spd and his is an auto by the way if that makes a difference. I just wanted to hear some opinions, thanks!

race him and find out.

you'll walk him assuming you don't miss a shift. tell him he can't beat you when his car is broken down on the side of the road.

There is no reason for you not to win unless you are new to 5spds. Saturns are not that fast.

BTW-Keep it safe.

Yeah I guess I'll go for it. I'm not new to 5spds but there is a chance that I could miss a shift cause my transmission seems to be going downhill-oh well maybe my short throw shifter will make a difference. Anyway I'll probably go for it down at Sacramento or something. Thanks guys.

There's nothing to worry about man, there's no way a saturn can beat a max, even if you do miss a gear, you can still regain yourself in a quarter mile time, especially since you have a 5 spd. Question, since all your friends are saying it is fast... did u ever punch your car with them in it, maybe then they would know.

I don't know much about what makes cars 0-60 times faster but I think the new Saturn ION Red Line w/205hp is starting to get up there.

Don't get me wrong SATURN Sucks!!

this has to be the saddest thing ive ever heard. when i took driving school i drove a 1999 saturn sl2 and honestly, it was the slowest piece of **** ive ever driven in my life. i had it floored for about a minute and it barely got to 60 in that amount of time. that is why driving schools often use saturns...because they are SLOW!!! you will have no problem taking that. be safe. peace out.

Agreed. I think if it's a regular SL2, you could just about start out in 2nd gear, miss 3rd altogether, and still win by a nose. I test drove one once, and I think it would be a better match for my wife's '01 GXE Sentra.
However, I don't know much about the new RedLine cars either. If it is 205 hp you'll probably have to at least pay attention and drive. I still don't think he'll get you, but I haven't seen the torque ratings and don't know much about Saturns in general.

A SATURN?!?!?! LOL!!! My friend beat an SC2 (The one above the SL2) in his stock 95 Civic DX Hatchback. (Not that any of my friends drive civics or anything...) You'll easily take him. Actually, you're not that far away from where I am. If you don't wanna embarrass him, I'll drive down there and do it for ya. be safe tho.

This is too easy of a question. It's a saturn is not a nissan. The saturn is less recognizable as a sports car than the maxima is. You'll whip that ****. I wouldn't be afraid to race him. Good luck!

Flush the transmission. Red line or Purple synthetic. I drained grey cr@p. Now it shifts easier.

Jeez guys sorry for upsetting you. I no nothing about Saturns so to me it could very well have been a quick car. My friends know how fast my car is and the way they talked about it they made it sound like I was going to get schooled...they're probably either being sarcastic (if they were I wasnt picking it up) or they were trying to psyche me out. Anyways I get it now, I can beat him. Again, sorry for upsetting you.

And the comment about a Ferrari racing a Neon....
I personally know of a Neon SRT-4 that would use a ferrari to wipe it's a$$

ecotec = good stuff.

as cullen said, a SATURN just broke the FWD record and was the first into the 7's..

also, a saturn set a speed record at 212mph...

lingenfelter had a weak 1180hp from his 4bangin ecotec..
and was the first 4cylinder into the 6second 1/4

oh and the fact that gm sells factory parts to take you to 1000+hp (minus the actual turbo.. hoyo used a garret to break the 4 digit dyno) and the parts are relatively cheap makes it kind of cool too.

not say saturns are fast, but watch out for properly mod'd ecotecs

Hey guys, any of you actually owned a 1st gen SL2 ?? If you did you'd know better than to say bad things about it. These cars are really fun to drive, very very very light, little torquey engine. I had close to 20 cars in my life, almost everything and this one was really fun. A 5spd 1st gen will totally smoke a Civic EX that you guys have in the states. OF COURSE the Max will beat him, we're talking 8.3 to 60mph vs 7.0 or so... Come on, not even close.

They totally lack refinement and have a couple of flaws built in, noisy, No roof rails to prevent water from falling on you when it rains and you open the doors, They rust BIG time (not the plastic parts.. hehe) etc etc... But they're also quite reliable. I have 250000km on mine and it still runs good even though it burns a lot of oil. (Compression still good). Anyways, just thought I'd reply to all of those that said it was a crappy car and that never even drove one. I'd much rather have a SL2 than a civic or a neon... Beurk !!

I hate to tell you your WRONG and I agree with HlH on this. I work at saturn and the Redline ion w/ supercharger will beat a Max. The redline will do 14.5 in the 1/4 mile stock. Sorry guys.

As for the real topic, the sl2 will get smoked !

No offense but my take is usally anytime somebody ask's can i beat dadadadada or something like that it doesn't really inspire with much confidense for that person. A 5spd max should beat any stock saturn made. Espicaly any auto made. There is a guy in my town that has intake, header, no cat, full exaust, no carpet no seat's, oversized throttle body, and some other **** I don't remember on a v6 5spd model saturn and It runs 15.456 as it's best best time at the track, and my car has intake, y pipe, jwt ecu, custom b pipe stock muffler and I run a 14.752 with full interior. You should walk walk walk him. just my 0.2
