What highway speed proves to be the best gas milage...

engine light with 1008 EVAP...

If so, there is no way that you got that kind of gas mileage.
If you get 350 per tank, like I did before I changed out my fuel filter and started using premium gas, you will only get like 20 mpg.

i jus came back from a road trip to canada...i filled up my tank in brooklyn b4 i left and 1 tank of gas took me to the canadian border and i still had enuff left to drive around with.. i was doin an average on 60-70mph caz da troopers were hot on da highway...

Usually cruising on the hwy around 75 I can usually average about 28mpg. Last tank was 95% hwy and I got 470 miles, 15 gallons to fill it up - almost 31 mpg - gas light wasn't even on - I could've easily made it to 500 miles..
If running totally around town, it suffers terribly - down to 22mpg...

Got 27 MPG driving 75 MPH. Im a 5-speed and I was not taking it easy.. pretty good stuff considering: I read that gas milage does down 1% for every mile over 55. This makes sense to me because at higher speeds, most of the work you are doing is not much but pushing air out of the way (air resistance becomes the big factor). Thus, I would agree with those that say that 55 is the best speed for milage. But it might drive you nuts to go that slow.
I was wondering about RPMs and maximizing MPG. Does it make sense to drive the speed that gets your RPM to the max power that you see on the dyno chart? Thats for WOT so I dont know.... anyone got info on it- said another way:
Does your power max out / bump up at less than WOT at the RPM that gets you the max HP in the RPM band? (if this is the case, there may be something to driving according to the engine rather than a strict speed)

First I forgot to mention, my car had
29 psi tire presure
4 people in the car (total of 600 lbs)
last 3 tanks I added to the tank STP gas cleaner.
Brudaddy, when I went to the gas station inmy town (after the trip) my car had 1/4 tank left in, and the odometer trip said I had 343 driven on the last fill. when I put gas on my car the total amout of gallons was equal to 12.3 gallons.
343 miles devided by 12.3 gallons 343/12.3 =
27.8MPG
and lastly if I were to keep driving my car on the HW until my gas ran out (18.5 gallons in the maxima's tank)
27.8mpg X 18.5gl = 514.3 Miles on the tank
I hope you all understand.

One thing I thought I should mention: I remember hearing some people say - and I have definately noticed - that the gas gague doesnt really behave linearly. What I mean is that the first 1/4 goes really really slowly, and the last 1/4 goes quick quick. So the way that I calculate how much petrol I have used for the odometer is to wait until the low gas light comes on steady, as soon as it does, I fill the tank up, and then check how many miles until it comes on again. Its right about 17 gallons.

I don't think I have ever had that good of mileage....well, once I got 28mpg.
Nice job.

Thats the same way I do it Spainard. I was mislead into thinking that the Auterra will read tank level but it hasn't so far on the 10 cars I've run it on. Oh well. I got 35MPG on a 100 mile drive to a meet on Sunday.

What exactly is different engine/exhaust-wise on the '99s as far as emissions? With a Y-pipe you're already getting rid of a lot of restrictiveness (2 or 3 pre-cats) and the rest of the exhaust is the same as a '95, unless the cat is heftier on a '99.
And Broaner, I don't trust what the Auterra (ECU) thinks you're getting on the highway, I'd like to see how many miles you're getting to a tank now to find out actual MPG. Get out that pen & paper at Marathon and record a few tanks!

I wonder if Canadian Maxima gas tanks are bigger. We get our gas in litres. My car holds 67.3 litres. Equating that to US gallons comes to 18.5 gallons (or 14.8 Imperial gallons, which is how we used to measure as our quart is 40 ounces and US is 32 ounces). I have gotten over 500 miles on a tank numerous times. The most I have ever had is just over 550 miles and I was close to running on fumes. I drove from Vancouver to the Okanagan Valley over the Coquihalla highway last weekend.
That involves a lot of climbing once you're out of the Fraser Valley, 100 miles east of Vancouver. I had 2 passengers and a little bit of luggage and average 28 miles to the US gallon equivalent - About 1/2 the trip was spend at 75mph on cruise control and the rest was lower.
I suspect optimum fuel economy is certainly under 70 mph, probably closer to 60, but on a divided highway who could drive that slow for sustained periods of time. The difference in fuel saved at cruising at 75 vs 65 is probably not significant - maybe 1 mpg.

Yeah man. I'm skeptical about the Auterra also but I think its ballpark. Check it! I've got between 2/3 and 3/4 of a tank and I'm at 155Miles. Now that is insane. I recomend to all to replace your rear o2's. That mileage is with only 75 highway miles. The rest is city(and fairly spirited city) because I reset the odo when I filled up in Lake Mills. I will actually do the math though next time I fill up.
