Rear brakes problem

It seems as though my rear brakes are hardly working now for some strange reason. I don't know how long it was like this since i haven't driven the Maxima in a while, but it has been driven regularly by my parents while i was away. The problem seems to be that they're working, but not clamping down with the force that they should be. Basically when i stop, the fronts are doing almost all of the work. How i know this is that after driving for 15-20 mins with a few 80+ to 0 stops, the rears are still barely warm and the rust that has built up from the contact area on the rotors has been there for a week of constant driving (week before going to vegas) and only slowly wearing off after driving.

I didn't install the rotors and pads by myself as i was away from school when they wore out, but the rears were worn down to the point where they stuck to the rotors, so the rotors and pads were replaced. Axxis in the front, PBR in the rear.

Any suggestions?

Your calipers are most likely frozen in the rear. Be prepared $$$$$$$$

Caliper's are frozen, one of my rears are like that too... changing it this week. Found out while changing all my pads/rotor's, caliper was real tight when turning it in.

Blast. I think i'm going to try reoiling everything first. It's weird that BOTH of the rear calipers have the same problem at the exact same time. I was hoping maybe a reconditioning could help. Usually when this happens it's only 1 caliper that goes bad at a time. Any other suggestions? I might try what motorvate.ca suggests and reoil everything? Is there anything different i need to know for the rear? Replacing the calipers is out of the question until i can find a job It looks like the Maxima is going to be parked up a lot until i can get this fixed. Anybody have an idea how much this could run?

Hey... you can pick up reman calipers from partsamerica.com for about 80 bucks each (after you return your old calipers to them for core credit).... if you need to replace the rotors, you're looking at another 150 or so for both rotors (Nissan parts), and another 60 bucks for Nissan pads... so in parts you're looking at:

Rotors: 150
Pads: 60
Calipers: 150
Misc. 10 (anti-squeal, anti-sieze, etc.)
-------------
Total: $430.00 (not including labor).

These parts prices are wholesale prices, e.g. courtesyparts.com (for the Nissan parts). If you go to your local dealer at 20% to the Nissan parts cost. Nissan rebuilt calipers are also much more expensive.

If you end up taking this into a dealer I would be prepared for a >600 dollar bill. A local Midas chain type place might do it for 400 or so (just a guess.. I haven't paid for brake work in over 10 years). You could probably knock off 50-60 bucks off the parts if you go with non-OEM rotors and pads (e.g. Raybestos).

Sorry for the long reply - Just had something useful to contribute for a change!

After I first changed my rear pads, I would touch the rotors and find the same thing--fronts too hot to touch, and rears only warm. After 25 mi of stop and go the rears would be hot to touch, but still not as hot as the fronts. FYI my rear pads crumbled when I took them out--there was still pad left, but it was so brittle it fell off the backing material.

Before spending any money, take everything we're saying in our responses with a grain of salt. If it were me, it'd be remanuf from advance auto ($79), factory rotors and pads. I've never had to do it though, I've done factory pads front and back and had no issues with rotors/calip.

My first test would be to see if the car rolls when releasing the ebrake on a hill, and then does it grab when it's pulled? If so, then I don't think your caliper is seized. Sorry, but when I asked about my rear brakes it was the common response again, despite the fact that I said it clamps and releases with the park brake cable. In my case, it wasn't true and would have wasted a lot of time and $$. Before buying anything take a look yourself and use your common sense. Good luck.
