Weird problem...ENGINE??? Need Help...

I think i'm gonna have to go to a mechanic with this but I'll try you guys first...

I just got to work and on the way something happened that never happened before (it's still happening now).

When in 3rd gear (auto) my rpm's don't go up smoothly when I'm accelerating... They tick (just like the seconds on a clock) ... I have no idea what this could be, 1st, 2nd & 4th gears are ok...it's just the third... It ticks from 3000, 3200, 3400, 3600 rpm's, etc ..... very strange and annoying, the car still accelerates normally but the rpm's tick, tick, tick...

I did use a new gas station to fill up yesterday & I put in plus instead of super...

Did anyone every have this problem?

Thanks,
Sam

I doubt the tranny would click due to gas.

But, when's the last time you flushed your tranny fluid? You could try that or that OUTLAW octane booster...

i have a brand new transmission (straight from the dealer) I have about 5,000 miles on it. So that shouldn't be a problem.

So if I understand correctly... the car is accelerating normally, but the RPM gauge is not moving smoothly (jerking/ticking/whatever you want to call it) ?

I'm not sure, but I think the VSS (vechicle speed sensor) provides input from the tranny to the instrument cluster for both the RPM and Speedometer - so it may be bad/loose from the recent tranny swap, or possibly you have a bad instrument cluster...that would be the worst case (I would imagine).

Yes the vss does get signals from the tranny. Its a magnetic pulse generator, that makes a small voltage as a relutor(notched gear looking thing) moves past it. This is what determines what the speedometer will read. This is the first place I wuold start looking as it is the easiest, and since you got a new trans.

So the VSS provides the input for both the speed and the RPMs..(clearly one can be derived from the other based on tranny gearing and factory tire size)....?
