Well I just got a tune-up 2 weeks ago, replaced all the essentials(spark plugs, all filters, gaskets, pcvalve). Car runs like a dream and I've been a Maxima owner for less than 2 months.

But starting last week, the car started to jerk when I turned my key to start. Then the only way to start it was to hit the gas. Everything was fine for a few weeks, until I ran to Home Depot to get some screws. I get back in the car to start it, and no luck. Won't start.

Called SprintPcs Roadside, and tow truck guys tells me the starter is shot. Horrible, and I just dropped $220 on the viper gd, $45 on mudflaps, $70 on a oem cd player, $20 on gagues, $35 on rings, $20 on some fop and pba stickers on ebay and paid I bunch of bills all this morning and my tank is on E. Money is running low until next week.

I'm looking online and most starters are rebuilt going for around $220, I'm in good w/ my local mechanic so he won't rip me on the install. Anybody know the going rate and locations for a cheap starter.

But if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.

 

Sorry to hear that man, it sucks. I myself am having problems starting and it won't even try to start unless my wheels are completly straight... and if the car isn't on, same goes for the power steering and its a bastard to turn without it, but hopefully this weekends tune up (300Z fuel filter, clean the throttle body, and a 300Z fuel pump) will do the job. I had the same problem that you had. Except the starter quit on me at my house. I had my dad push start me to the mechanic. They charged me $225 for an OEM starter and an unfortunate install fee.

You can get a Nissan rebuilt starter for 220 - you can probably get a non-OEM starter for less. If you ilke you do your own wrenching, installing the starter is quite a simple job - instructions can be found at http://www.motorvate.ca - look under engine items.

Make sure to get an OEM starter. The ones from autozone and those places will fail on you within days or just not work at all.

 

Rebuilt one at Autozone goes for $140 or so, if I remember correctly. Got my replacement from there 2 years ago.

You can replace it yourself too, if you're kind of handy with tools.

You'll need:
17mm deep socket
12mm deep socket (I think those are the right sizes.)
a good strong breaker bar for the 17mm bolt

Just need to take out your stock intake first to make room, then you can reach it easily.

Took me about an hour when I did it.

This story sounds like mine. The same thing happened, but I was in my driveway. My father helped me tow it (pull it) around the corner to the machanic. Did it in ghetto style fashion: borrowed rope, broken c clamp and socket wrench. The fawking thing came of 3 times. Saved $50.00 thou.

I got my starter from Autozone, installed it myself, and have had ZERO problems since then. It was cheap and easy to install. I say but one from an auto parts store, install it yourself, and save $$$$.

 

Consider yourself lucky. most "discount" part stores sell crap parts with AZ being one of the worst offenders.
You don't neccessarily have to go back to the dealer to buy the starter but avoid ones with a 90 day warranty or a lifetime warranty.
The best one's I've found were the ones witha 2 year warranty.
I sell new one's and remans too.

 

When my starter was going bad last spring, I was able to put off replacing the unit for several weeks by using the starter tapping method. I was ordering a reman starter and it was going to take about 2 weeks to get it. When the starter itself didn't make a sound when attempting to crank, I would pop open the hood and give the starter a few taps with a long ratchet wrench. It was pretty funny having people in my car, stopping somewhere, coming out and using this method to get the car started.

 

Just got it back from the mechanic, starter was $270 plus $75 for labor. I know it's an easy install, but I'm not going to front like I'm a mechanic. At least he cleaned the throttle body while he was there, car's acceleration feels alot better. Life sucks. I need a viper alarm asap.
