What the!!! Odometer Rollback? WTF!
So I did a carfax and what did I find out about my car?? Maybe I shouldn't have done the carfax because now im furious.

The problems seem to come out little by little. I could have swore I did a carfax on the car before I bought it back in 2003 and checked out the mileage and everything. I didn't notice anything wrong with the mileage and crap back then. Now looking at the carfax, it seems that within 2 years, mileage dropped! Man am I ****ed. So basically the car now supposibly has about 114k miles on it when in reality it probably has 150k+. I just recently took apart my gauges because I wasn't getting a check engine light and when I had it apart, there was no bulb at all where it's suppose to be! Whoever took the bulb out must have fcuked with the odometer!!!!! Im about to go back down to rhode island to beat the shiet out of the ghetto azz guy I bought it from . Not to mention the fact that the car smelled like odor and a$$ when I bought it. I just received my budget y pipe and progress springs and I find this out plus the check engine light bulb incident. I had the windshild replaced, cleaned out the smell from top to bottom, put a new axle in, minor mods, mb quart component speakers, aftermarket hu, amplifiers, subs, oil change and filter every 3k, brand new falken tires, spark plugs, gas filter, 2 alignments within a week and treated it like it was the shiet since I bought it plus more. Who wants to blow up my friggin car so I can claim insurance?? Anyone?? I guess I won't ever sell the car and will own it until it dies. Damn I hate scandalous people. My 1st real car that I can call my own and I find all this crap now.
How do you roll back the odometer anyways?

Cant blame anyone but yourself. I mean you didnt pay close enough attention. Hell CarFax has a warrenty for a year if you would have found anything incorrect on the car report you could have gotten your money back.
That dude got you. Chalk it up as a lesson learned.
1) Always do your research.
2) A car can sometimes be a reflection of its owner and vise versa. So if the car is all rag tag then what do you expect from the owner? The owner is all ghetto what do you expect from the car?
You could sue him if you could prove that you knew nothing about it and he did.
Good luck

It is a federal crime (and a felony) to roll back an odometer without an odometer discloure statement attached to the title.
Also, it is a felony to HIDE or CONCEAL a defect in a vehicle. You do not have to DISCLOSE it to a buyer (caveot emptor), but you may not intentially conceal it.
Bust his @$$.

Were the odometer numbers ligned up properly or were any of the numbers out of line with the others?
I just boaght a MAX and I may have been screwed too. The numbers on the odometer are way out of wack! A few things happening with my car tells me that the miles are incorrect!
There are laws to protect people and there are investigators that check for fraud such as this. If I am not mistaken, this is a Federal Crime!
I would call you local & state authorities!!! Keep calling until you find someone that will listen. This is considered to be a major crime with very stiff penalties.
Post his name and put pressure on the ******* too!!! Call him everyday. Ask for your money back too. Be sure to tell him that you have the local and state authorites looking into this matter. He may get scared and give your money back! TRY WHATEVER IT TAKES!!!!!!!!!
Let me know how this works out for you and I will keep you posted on my investigation!

You might want to look into this law via any search engine.
Truth-in-Mileage Act - The Truth in Mileage Act (TIMA) of 1986 requires a seller to disclose the vehicle's mileage on the title when ownership is transferred. Congress enacted this Act to prohibit odometer tampering and to protect consumers from mileage fraud. Under this act, sellers must disclose any issues with the vehicle's odometer. These disclosures translate into the Exceed Mechanical Limits and Not Actual Mileage titles

I had some time on my hands this afternoon so I went ahead researched a little about:
1) Where to send your Odometer to be checked.
Speed-O-Tach, Inc. has State Certified Odometer Specialists who can inspect your odometer for fraud. If you think you are a victim of odometer fraud, give us a call at (800) 442-4491 or e-mail us at justaskus@sotelectronics.com.
2. The federal fines.
Sec. 32710 Civil Actions by Private Persons
1. Violation and amount of damages - A person that violates this chapter or a regulation prescribed or order issued under this chapter, with the intent to defraud, is liable for 3 times the actual damages or $1,500.00, whichever is greater.
2. Civil Actions: A person may bring a civil action to enforce a claim under this section in an appropriate United States district court or in another court of competent jurisdiction. This action must be brought no later than 2 years after the claim accrues. The court shall award cost and a reasonable attorney's fee to the person when a judgment is entered for that person.
Hope this helps.

It's not uncommon for a vehicle to raise red flags with the odometer. My cars did it, my friend's truck did it. But these were maybe 1K off and there was an explanation (emissions, registration, service, etc).
50K is a spicy meatball though.

I always seem to get caught up in stupid stuff without realizing it. Its almost like its following me. I really hope it was a faulty past reading. I guess I'll do some research before I do anything drastic. Taking out the check engine light bulb to conceal a problem (actually 3- knock sensor, egr, and rear 02) is BS. Right there is already intention to conceal. I'm sure the problems were there before I bought it. I've put in 94/93 gas since day one. I would think many people would fall for that when purchasing a vehicle. I didn't think to turn the key to "on" to make sure a check engine light is there. I didn't realize this until the other day. My car wasn't at it's potential so I decided to check the ecu. I thought the bulb just blew but damn, no bulb at all. The #'s are all lined up perfectly. I didn't get any service records from the guy because he said that he just paid a local mechanic to fix the car up. Yea I know, Im a fcuken idiot and I took the car anyways. I noticed little problems but I knew I was most likely replacing parts like struts and springs anyways. To me, it wasn't a big deal at the time. He was asking $3700, I gave him $3400 cash. I really thought I was getting a deal, but time tells otherwise.

I forgot to mention the fact that I had the car sitting in my garage for more than a month. The reason being was that the guy I bought it from originally was going to sell it to someone else and had written his name on the title. The name was crossed out when the car was bought. I had trouble getting a hold of the guy for the longest time because I needed a notarized note from him stating why the name was crossed out just so I can register the car. He had a recent rhode island inpection sticker so I really don't know why that odometer reading wasn't on the carfax. Everything is just so frustrating right now. My gf babysits for a lady who is a lawyer's secretary. Maybe that can help. Im a college student strapped for cash and bad luck follows me like shiet on a stick.

Is it possible to just replace the whole gauge cluster to show a lower mileage? Like I said before, all numbers lined up perfectly.

I work for Carmax, and we USE to use Carfax, and we found them to be inaccurate. We then switched over to www.autocheck.com But what we have found in the past is that sometimes on these reports human error occurs, and we just call them to have them make corrections in their database. There is a chance that your ODO has not been tampered, and there is a chance that it has been. Also check the milage on your title and see what that reads and compare that to the readings. I do believe that if you were to roll back the ODO on the Maxima, there is a marker that will black out the numbers to show that there has been possible roll back, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Just my 2 cents. I hope it helps.

So if somebody puts it in wrong, for whatever reason, or some $7/hr lackey at a car detailing shop or gas station on behalf of a insurance carrier records it wrongly, you conclude that the ODO went backwards, and it can't possibly be a problem with the reporting mechanism? Well, if this thread is any indicator, maybe we can sue our way out of this poor economy. Let me put it this way, I'm an original owner and I've seen my carfax--there's 2 entries where 1 year went by and the difference is only 1000 miles. The entry is from delivery i.e. the initial registration, and the 2nd entry is from when I changed insurance cos. So sue me!
This has nothing to do with the economy. This has to do with a possible victim of speedometer roll-back fraud which is a FEDERAL crime.
I REALLY HOPE HIS ODOMETER IS indeed CORRECT and that this was an error on CarFax's watch as others have stated.
I listed the results of who to contact for further investigation instead of going on 'pure speculation'. But I believe that every citizen has the right to be protected from fraudulent practices such as this. Just think, if it were you that just purchased a car and you then found the miles were possibly rolled back....I would be VERY VERY ticked off to say the least. Something like this could make a person angry that the TRUE milage may never be known.....plus, how does one judge the correct maintenance schedule if one does not know the actual milage.....etc
If someone screwed me over, you can bet your sweet _ss that I would use all means to make things right. I would investigate the matter first and if I were to find that my car had the milage rolled back, I would seek to be FULLY re-compensated via the laws that were put into place to protect every American citizen.
Just my personal thoughts and opinion which we all have.

Carfax is not that accurate. My dad owns a van which we brought new and I checked it on carfax and it said the odometer was rolled back. Definately do not put all your trust in carfax.
#21
Im not depending on carfax simply for the fact that humans punch in numbers into the computer and can make mistakes. I saw a post some time ago where someone said that you should go ask your insurance about the history of the car. I'll probably do that. I really don't want to go into a hassle with rollbacks and such.
#22
I hope you find the milage to be CORRECT, but if it turns out that you were scammed, you ought to post the results for other members that might have the same experience or may possibly head off a bad purchase of a Maxima.

Well, not to be mean or anything, but when I sell my car, I plan to roll back the odometer. My friend's friend does it in his shop.
Believe it or not, he charges $150 for odo rollback on German vehicles because it's an easy process. Rollback on a Japanese Maxima with a digital odo takes longer and is a bit more complicated (...because it's not enough to just hook up to the computer) - hence the price of $300.

Nice Boss. Scratch one 4-gen off my list. Speaks highly of your integrity (aka none)
BTW. You can get complete records from your state's DMV. It's also FREE. But it takes about a week to get. So give the DMV a call and ask them the proper procedure.
