the past few days my car has barely started - it would crank a real long time and then finally start- i thought it was the battery but everything else works (lights, horn radio, etc) i tried jumping it for the hell of it but nothing happened so anyway now when i turn the key there is no cranking at all just a click - i banged the starter with a socket to try to get it working and it cranked a little but not enough to start it - i just had my starter replaced like 1.5 yrs ago

Maybe you could try taking it out and regreasing it.

If you determine the starter/solenoid is ok then read on... About 2-3 years ago my 96 SE would crank but not start. I surfed this board and found several people with similar problems. The following is from memory so I might have a few minor terminology erros.. The valve on the air intake requires cleaning. I remember the phrase "throttle body cleaning." I took decrease of some sort and a toothbrush and cleaned it out. It cranked for a bit, blew a little smoke, but was fine after 5 mins of driving. Saved me a couple hundred bucks.

same thing happened to me about 4 months ago, sounds like the starter, cuz mine was real slow to crank, and then one day nothing turn key engine wouldnt crank only a click. jumping didnt help either had to get it towed from my school
