A/C problem, alternates between cool and cold air

Here's an interesting one. My A/C (manual climate control) was constantly blowing almost-warm air, or not as cold as it used to be, so I brought it to the dealership and they added refrigerant. Now, it seems to alternate between cold and almost-warm air, acting as if the compressor is turning itself on and off every few minutes or so. I can definitely feel the difference, over the course of a few minutes the A/C will blow icy cold air, then then it will blow almost-warm air for a few minutes before blowing cold air again. This is all in highway driving when I noticed this. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is a general rule, but when the AC cycles on and off means you have to add refrigerant. That's the case with my dad's Volvo 850. Also my brother's Saturn SC2 has the same problem, his diagnosis is probably a bad AC clutch. I hope this helps. Best thing to do is go get a gauge from your auto parts store that tells you how much refrigerant you have, and do yourself a favor and get a good one, not the cheap ones that look like a tire gauge, in my experience they're not very accurate.

well you can stop your car, and while its idleing watch to see if the idle changes due to your compressor clutch turning on and off. If its turnig on and off very rapidly then you are low on refrigerant.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what it the clutch is definitely not engaging at all? I have auto climate control and my AC does not go on at all.

yes, the compressor is cycling on and off every couple of minutes, but not rapidly. i guess i need refrigerant again. the dealer just added some a couple of months ago, so maybe the leak is getting pretty bad.

Iam not a big expert on auto climate control, but I am willing to bet that if you set it fro a cold setting, and nothing happens, then its probably a lack of refrigerant. Buut the only way to know is to put a guage on it.

Hey Masaccio, any word on any maxima wisconsin meets?
