Changing out automatic shifter
Changing out automatic shifter
I bought a leather wrapped shifter for my GXE, and I was wondering how I should go about removing the old one. I have the whole assembly, and it looks like there are two studs that go into the floor pan and have nuts under the car. I tried removing the screws on the back side of the shifter, but there are two little wires for the overdrive switch that won't come off.
Yeah I just changed mine last weekend. In order for you to be able to get comfortably to the Overdrive cable connectors you'll have to remove the entire center console (where the Cup Holder is) which is really simple (just 4 screws) and also remove the dash kit from around the shifter (this includes the pop-out ash tray).
You won't be able to remove the stock shifter until you disconnect the overdrive wires. So After you've removed all mentioned above look for these connectors and try to disconncet them. In my case they were so tight that i just decided to cut the wires and just screw the new shift ****'s overdrive cables by hand with the cables that come out of teh car. CAUTION though you don't want to cut the cables that come out from the car too short and then not be able to connect them to the new shifter's wires.
It's a fairly simple installation.

Yes it's an OEM shifter from a 95 GLE. Got it from Feltons Nissan/Infiniti wrecking in WA. Thanks for the instructions on removing the shifter. What way should I pull the O/D wires? Looks like I should either pull back or pull down toward the floor. Thanks.
