<<hacked airbox mod? What's that?>>
It basically is what it sounds like. Your airbox is in 2 parts, the upper part and the lower part, clamped together. The actual air filter sits on top of the lower half. So you unclamp everything, remove a few hoses, and the rubber accordian hose connected to the throttle, disconnect the 2 electrical connectors to the airbox, and pull the assembly out. Then take out the air filter, and then remove the 4 screws at the bottom to pull out the lower half of the box. Then "hack" the triangular looking side of the box. I drilled holes around the perimeter, and then used a screwdriver to pop the shape out. You cut out the entire side. Reassemble and your done. Took 10 minutes to do.
Got my directions from http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....40#post2393840 and used link 2.
It sounds about as good as other intakes out there, I noticed a little power increase, espcecially between 2000 and 4500 rpm. Gives the engine a real deep and throaty tone, and deepened my exhaust tone as well.

Hack it. It sounds almost the same as my friend's Max with an Injen in it. I still smoked him too. The reason I didn't go for an Injen is 1) it is almost 300 bucks, and 2) pulls in almost nothing but warm air from the radiator.
At least with the one side of the air box open, you get a lot more unrestricted air flow, and the air on the open side is generally cooler.

You get good gains with a y-pipe no matter what kind of intake setup you have. The only reason I wouldn't go with a y-pipe/CAI combo is because with any kind of aftermarket muffler/exhaust setup it would be loud as hell. Now if you want that kind of sound as a trade-off for the performance it will get you, then yeah, go for it .
I'm saving for a y-pipe myself, hopefully before the fall semester that thing will be under the car.

I'm taking the money that would have went to the CAI and putting it right into an aluminum dask kit. That'll finish off my interior REAL nice.

Stock airbox. Them nerds at Nissan actually do know what they are doing!
I'm planning a CAI/Hacked Hybrid. 2 1/2" duct through the fender like a CAI comming up into the bottom of the box. Won't see a thing. Hopefully the routing will keep it out of the wheel well.
I have the GLE with no fog lights. I'm going to cut out both "blanks" in the bumper cover and on the left side run the duct from there to the air box.
Porterfield has some nice "NACA" ducts in various sizes. I find one that fits best and secure it to the backside of the cutout for a clean transition to the duct pipe.
Add some of the mesh grill material Cattman sells to give it a finished look.
On the right side, just the grill material to match the left. This might make a good location for an engine oil cooler in the future. No too sure if there's anything back there to support a cooler...

You won't regret it. While I was doing that, I figured since all of the hoses were off, in particular the one connected to the throttle body, I looked into it and saw nothing but black grime and such all around in there, so I cleaned that sucker out. Bought cabourator (sp?) cleaner, 2 bucks at Pep Boys, opened up the throttle, and sprayed that bad boy like no other. After a few minutes of spraying and letting the crap drip out and wiping it all down with a cloth, I had a squeaky clean throttle body, and a hacked airbox to boot.
A definite power gain.
Just thought I'd pass that along.

I also have the GLE and want to cut those out to put some grille mesh. What's the best way to go about doing that? Tried using a few knives but that got me nowhere. Should I drill holes and then go from there?

I also replaced my stock airbox tonight as well. Ive noticed that not only that Ive gained low end power, but also top end. Im guessing I gained the top end because at the high speed, more air is getting pushed into the intake duct. My 80-110 speeds are significantly higher, im very happy with it. I do miss the tone, and my exhaust tone, so I may hack the box just for the shere sound~ I read about doing it, but was kinda holding back in fear I would loose some vacuum with my stock intake, and also get some engine heat going in, but I hear nothing but good things, so I might as well do it.

Any tips to loosening the intake hose to the throttle body? I would like to see what has crept up in there as far as grime.

There's 2 clamps on the rubber accordian hose connecting to the throttle body, one on the TB side, and one on the side connecting to the air box. Just loosen and remove the clamps by unscrewing them with a a flathead, and then wiggle the hose right off.
If the hose is really on there good, you can park your car for the night and pour hot water on it. Let it sit for a few moments, and it will pull right off. The hot water trick is good an all rubber hoses under the hood by the way, especially radiator hoses.

You could easily cut out the bumper openings with a soidering iron. I would just make a nice line around it first with a felt tipped marker & use that as my guide when cutting out the plastic with the iron. Just make sure to cut alittle bit inside the line so you can come back with some sand paper to clean up the opening & then use alittle touch up paint to cover up the black plastic. Should come out really nice that way!
ive run too many intake combos and its all for sound or looks. I have a stillen hybrid right now and I like it. But the hacked airbox is a really nice setup....good sound, better flow, and free! You wont be disapointed with a hacked box.
