$655 to replace knock sensor????

The dealer said it would be $655 to replace the knock sensor in my car. Does it really take that much time? Is this something I could maybe do myself. Thats seems like alot of money just to replace a sensor.

It takes 30-60 minutes. The part only costs $120.

they do it where they take the intake manifold off. so it takes longer. that is the "correct" way of doing it. i put it in quotes.

one reason why it would be more costly.

I hope they use some lube on you cuz thats all you'll be getting...

It takes less than half an hour. Most of that time is trying to squeeze under the intake... its not that hard

You can get knock sensors for around $120 on ebay.

Thanks for the fast replies. Now I will do it myself and save a ton of money. Maybe thats why it seems like my dads Maxima pulls harder than mine. The sensor has been bad for about 4 months.

Just a side note, thats typically what dealers will charge to do it (I belive they remove the intake manifold).

i think this is the largest dealer rape quote ive seen on the org. thats a crap load to change a knock sensor, i bet that mechanic would just end up doing it the way we would (not removing manifold and squeazing hand in there to remove it). i would recomend doing it yourself or buying the sensor off ebay for 100 and go to a shop if you want someone to do it. good luck

yea do it urself, i did mine, it was a b!tch to get it loose and it tighten it up, but w/a socket extention and a flexible head, it shouldn't take u too long. was a lil frustrating b/c my hand couldn't fit under the manifold and the socket kept slippin...but hey i saved a **** load of money.
