Auto and 5spd starter are the same. I know because I did a 5spd swap and used the same starter. I think the different model numbers are for 6 or 10 tooth starter. I bought a replacement from autozone and it said it worked for both.

It says that that starter is for a 1988. It doesn't look anything like my 1996 starter. Just my $.02.

They are both DIFFERENT. they are two totally different starters. The reason the two have different numbers of teeth is that one is for the auto and one is for the 5spd. You should not use your auto starter on your 5spd. There is a reason there is a different number of teeth on the starters.

Yes there is and it was mentioned above. They fit the same application but one is has 6 teeth while the other has 10. I'd take th eone with 10 as they are "replacements" for the older 6 tooth design. Also be carefull when buying an autozone starter, there were a few horror stories about them. One member went through 3 or 4 of them and they did not "work" for him. He finally got an OEM one and his problem was fixed.

There are quite a few people here, myself included, who have done the auto to 5-speed swap using the same starter with no problems. I did the swap two years and 35k miles ago.
