Installed Cone Filter, now car won't go past 3000 rpm

i just installed a cone filter into my 96 max, and just as soon as i started my engine, i got a CEL. so i checked it and it said Mass Air Flow Sensor. when i stepped on the gas, i felt a little rumble and the car just shut itself off. I know its not the battery or the starter, since the car did start. this happened a couple of times. all of a sudden, when i stepped on the gas, i was able to rev the engine, but only up to 3000 rpm. when it did reach that, it would start jerking like it would die. another problem i got was when i tried to reverse, the car would shut itself off again, similar to the first time i started the car. has this happened to anyone else?

check the MAF plug... it might seem like its in, but give it another push and it should click. if thats not it then I dunno, ive done it a couple times myself. simple fix.

phillysmoswantd Jul 21, 2004 01:33 AM

which plug are you talking about...

CaLSoNiC Jul 21, 2004 01:58 AM

The only plug on the MAF unit it self... unless you didnt disassemble it in the first place. oh and on '96 you gotta take the sensor outta the air box and stick it either in the filter through the MAF adapter and the filter its self or some people I think just zip tied it close to the filter.

maf is the black plastic square piece right before the filter, push the plug in more, unless you somehow pulled and broke one of the wires off of it

ill try that in the morning. i did take apart the whole intake to put in a CAI but when i started having problems, i put the stock parts back on except for the cone...

ok when i installed my intake, i could feel the gas pedal didnt wanna go in all the way, the problem was taht i was blocking the cruize control and gas lines under the hood. make sure they are free. look at intake manifold and see wat im talkin about

phillysmoswantd Jul 21, 2004 12:14 PM

checked the sensor, its in really tight. which lines are you talking about and where are they located?

gto400no1 Jul 21, 2004 12:24 PM

this definity sounds like your maf isnt in or functioning right. i know i have run my car once when it was disconected and it did the exact same thing until i hooked it back up.

happyricefob Jul 21, 2004 12:38 PM

don't forget to reset ur ECU :)

phillysmoswantd Jul 21, 2004 02:24 PM

im gonna try and back track every step i took and put everything back together once again

datguyclark Jul 21, 2004 02:39 PM

clean your MAFS with electronic cleaner really good allow a minute to dry and try again

phillysmoswantd Jul 21, 2004 07:27 PM

well the gas is now stuck whenever it gets to 2400 rpm. im pretty sure the MAF is not working because when i unplugged the sensor, it did the same thing so it has to be the MAF. is there an place out there that sells this cheap or should i head down to the junkyeard?

phillysmoswantd Jul 22, 2004 12:28 PM

bump...anyone know?

IZZYS96SE Jul 22, 2004 01:00 PM

Junkyard. They will charge you about $40

Kevlo911 Jul 22, 2004 01:02 PM

Clean the MAF sensor element with rubbing alcahol.

anyone know if a 97 MAFS will work with a 96? im not sure because the 96 has the air temp sensor but the 97 does not...

Kevlo911 Jul 23, 2004 12:31 PM

Yes it will

phillysmoswantd Jul 23, 2004 01:03 PM

going down to the junkyard today, when i take the MAFS out, do i take the entire wirirng or just the one attached to the sensor

if your pedal is stuck, make SURE you have clearance where you tightned the throttle body, and open the throttle to wide. sometimes you'll get lazy and just put the screw to close to the Accelerator cable.

venompwr2 Jul 23, 2004 07:23 PM

Make sure all your vacuum lines are reconected too. Didnt have the clips on tight after installing my intake and they came off while i was driving and the car stalled out. Quite hard to pull over w/o power steering!

Chunger Jul 26, 2004 12:46 PM

Check that you didn't bend any of the pins on the MAF plug... The symptoms point to a bad/disconnected MAF.

phillysmoswantd Jul 26, 2004 02:05 PM

which pins are you talking about
